Good morning!☕️ Today is #FridayPaleoart and we are going to travel to #Ural mountains 🏔️...

Cave: #Kapova or Shulgan-Tash
Place: Bashkortostan region (Russia)
Motif: Camel
Chronology: Upper Palaeolithic
❗️Kapova cave is one of the few Palaeolithic cave art examples from Siberia (Russia). Despite being at the Easternmost of the main density of the phenomena in Europe, this cave is really astonishing. Take a look to the mammoths and rhinos!
📚Kapova is located on the right bank of the Belaya river in the Bashkortostan region (Southern Urals, Russia). Early explorations and descriptions were made from the eighteenth century to the first third of the 20th century. In 1959, A.V. Ryumin discovered Palaeolithic paintings
During 1982–91, V. E. Schelinsky led a comprehensive study of the cave. He found an interesting UP cultural layer in the Chamber of Signs, containing a significant amount of limestone blocks, lithics, faunal remains, stains and pieces of ocher, more than 150 personal ornaments…
From 2008 to the present, V.S. Zhitenev led the ‘Southern Urals archaeological expedition’. In this research context, our colleague Aitor Ruiz-Redondo collaborates recording the rock art. They have recently published a paper in Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology.
📖They provide a detailed inventory of the graphic entities of the cave, where human representations and signs are more important than expected. Anyway, they conclude that the paintings share essential characteristics with their counterparts from SW Europe.
🐫⁉️But there are more surprises provided by the recent research in Kapova cave: camels!! A recent restoration process by @geudald has made visible a double humped camel. This is amazing!! Take a look to the paper.

And do not forget that the cave is placed in the Bashkiriya National Park, specifically in the Shulgan-Tash Nature Reserve. Do not miss this trip at least once in your life! https://peakvisor.com/park/bashkiriya-national-park.html
