i just digested the final chapter of aot and i'm quite surprised as well since i personally don't like eren to take lelouch route, tho realistically i think aot did it better. but story wise, code geass is no doubt greater. the downfall was eren's character but it ain't that bad-
or my expectations were just too high? anyways, lelouch is a strategist while eren isn't. i think that's the thing that we need to consider.

ps: (this thread would be my explanation about my understanding in aot so feel free to correct me if im wrong)
eren was granted to access fate but become slave by it. he was a puppet while ymir was the one pulling the strings, and when he saw dina ignoring bert, he went to the flow of events but little did he know that the event leads to dina eating his mom. his memory were all juggled.
this explains this panel and his line "what am i doing" again, eren was trapped in time loop. every event, past and future flashed simultaneously that's why carla's death happened.
the 1st panel happened after grisha stole the founding titan. as you can see, he was alone and asking if this event could really save eldia & carla. the 2nd panel was what happened after eren accessed the path, that's when grisha saw the future. again, everything is a time loop.
during those time loop, grisha already knows that the ending would be eren's dream and not zeke's. but if i were to ask, zeke's plan is way more better than eren but again eren doesn't want it because that's not the freedom he seeks.
"if other people are going to steal my freedom, i am going to steal theirs" remember, eren believes that freedom is what awaits them outside the walls. that is why he believes that wiping the titans would mean freedom but he's wrong. what awaits them are enemies.
most ppl says that eren is contradicting himself. but i don't think that's the case. again, eren's definition of freedom was the book that he and armin used to read. that's why he is willing to sacrifice himself just to achieve that freedom. (childish, yes.)
but like what i said, aot's downfall was eren's character, his childishness and selfishness. but again, that doesn't make the story bad. maybe we were just swayed by fanon eren that we unconsciously forgot who he really was.
he freed ymir. he break the curse. he wiped all the titan. he stopped the time loop. he made humanity equal. however, what he did would result hatred and war. that's the consequences of his action that's why he entrusted the future to everyone especially historia and her child.
historia's pregnancy is not useless, the child will lead them, the child would be the symbol of their freedom. the survivors would spread the story of the battle of heaven and earth. most importantly, armin and the others, they can broker a peace treaty to negotiate.
the future that eren left was for them to decide.
