Today’s Observations (4/8)

• Anthony Bass blew his 2nd save in as many opportunities today @ NYM

He demonstrated middling control & allowed a good amount of hard contact

Bass is signed through 2022 with a $3M club option for 2023, so it’s possible they stick with him for now
• Brandon Nimmo is 6/14 with a .579 OBP to start the season

One of the best annual OBP league values is looking good early

• Alex Reyes earned his 3rd save of the season today, which is tied for tops in the MLB

He has a 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K line so far
• José Berríos has a 64:16 K:BB & 2.50 ERA over his last 50.1 IP

This is a 26-year-old & former top-20 MLB prospect who continues to get better & better

• Byron Buxton hit his 4th HR of the season today (109.6 mph)

This is 30+ HR pace, Buxton is breaking out
• Marco Gonzales had a rough spring (7.24 ERA over 13.2 IP) & now has a 10.69 ERA through 10.1 IP to start the season

He allowed 10 BBE with a EV > 97.7 mph; he’s still a hold, for now

• Dom Núñez has 3 H & 3 HRs this season

He’s a borderline starter in 2 catcher leagues
• Christian Vázquez is 11/24 with 2 HRs, 2 SBs, & a 3:2 K:BB to start 2021

Reminder: he’s a catcher

• Craig Kimbrel has a 4.2 IP, 9 K line this season

After a sketchy spring, Kimbrel is proving to be one of the more reliable closers in fantasy early-on
• Griffin Canning threw his SL more than any other pitch today (39 times) & it induced 12 whiffs

It averaged 2622 RPM & he wasn’t afraid to throw it in the zone

Getting his SLs K-BB% back around its 2019 mark (20.8%) will be huge for his strikeout potential going forward
• Matt Chapman & Matt Olson are a combined 8/44 (.182 BA) with 1 HR (Chapman) to start 2021

They’ll get going eventually, but there seems to be a correlation between the #Athletics being 25th in runs scored coming into today’s 2-run effort & their slow starts to the season
• Corbin Burnes earned a whiff% ≥ 32% on five different pitches today

This was the fourth straight start where he threw his cutter 47%+ of the time.

In those starts (22.0 IP), he has a ridiculous 34:2 K:BB & 1.64 ERA

He’s one of the best SPs in the #MLB
