I have found information that it interesting and makes this whole T-Shirt Removal incident all the more confusing. The shirts in question that mentioned faculty and the president were displayed in what I believe to be (or at least could find online evidence for) the first
Clothesline Project that Safe Haven held for the community in 2017. This consisted of shirts from current university students BUT ALSO from community members, local SA support groups, and area schools. Unless someone has info they are choosing to keep to themselves to protect
their identity (which is understandable) we actually have no idea which president/faculty member these shirts are referencing.... could have been the 1990s, could have been a uni other than AU (probably unlikely but still) or it COULD HAVE BEEN in the last 3 years.
MY POINT, is that it doesn’t really make sense for AU to remove them (free speech is a whole other ball of wax) because they don’t know who they’re referencing. They just happened to get hung up in the university gallery this year, so everyone kind of assumed they meant recent
faculty. So why take them down?? Why not just clarify that some of the shirts are older and may not directly reflect current faculty/admin? Why are people assuming it was campo and calling for him to be held accountable? Am I missing something?
LET ME BE EXTREMELY CLEAR. I am a survivor myself. I believe and support other survivors. If it was Campo or a current faculty member who said these things, that’s terrible and they should be held accountable. But these shirts are also older, and made during a community event, it
Could very easily have been a previous AU Alum who has stayed in the area.... I don’t know. I just found it interesting I guess that AU was so quick to take them down when they’ve been displayed before.
This is not disparaging the fact that there are very obvious problems w/ how AU has handled reports/education/etc. & many people very obviously (& fairly) do not feel heard. I am in support of all of that, so pls don’t take this thread to mean I am minimizing the issues at hand.
