Good evening and welcome to what probably will be the final #NotableMarylandBills of #MDGA21, unless any bill hearings get pushed back to Saturday or the session gets extended AND more bill hearings are added... Shall we begin?
First up, the two bills going before the Senate Finance Committee, including HB 581 from Del. Dereck Davis, aka the “Maryland Essentila Workers’ Protection Act”: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Legislation/Details/HB0581?ys=2021rs.
HB 581 is a fairly seminal piece of legislation to provide important protections for Maryland’s essential workers, as its title indicates, even if it’s also been substantially watered down by various amendments from groups like the Greater Baltimore Committee....
Even so, it’s still easily one of the biggest bills to cross out of its own chamber after Crossover Day. Its crossfile, SB 486 from @Sen_M_Augustine did not, unfortunately, make it out of the upper chamber this year...
...But HB 581 itself passed the House last week, 93-39, with only Mary Ann Lisanti crossing party lines to vote against it:
The other bill going before Finance tomorrow is HB 934 from @DelBartlett32, which would make it easier for people to appeal to Maryland’s Secretary of Health certain findings made on death certificates by the state’s Chief Medical Examiner: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Legislation/Details/HB0934?ys=2021rs.
HB 934 passed the House last week, 129-1, the “1” in question being Trent Kittleman:
Possibly the last Senate side bill of this thread for the year is the one going before the Judicial Proceedings Committee tomorrow, HB 964 from Del. Neil Parrott: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Legislation/Details/HB0964?ys=2021rs. This one’s fairly self-explanatory, I think.
HB 964 passed the House late last month, 130-2.
