Ghandi said – ‘be the change you want to see in the world’ – During my schooling years I have always kept this motto close to my heart and head and been acutely aware of the challenges in our society growing up.
I vowed to myself that one day I would make a difference – I would significantly influence those lives around me in the best possible way. I haven’t gotten there YET but I am chipping away.
Breaking the mould and doing my bit to make a small difference that I hope will eventually be of significance.
After graduation from the University of Cape Town in 2005 – I started getting experience in this dynamic and vibrant career – from bridges to buildings to schools and services to the people. Every day was different, every day a new challenge and a new lesson.
I finally felt that I had found my life purpose. After 8 years of formal employment – I felt equipped and ready for a new journey – motherhood and self-employment.
I started as a Construction and Consulting Engineering practice within the intention of giving skilled disadvantaged artisans opportunities in the market to secure work.
Aspire (my company) would do new builds and renovations for home owners – the edge I would offer to my clients is that I am an Engineer by profession and would manage their project from a time cost and quality point of view.
We have since inception in 2015 moved to a Boutique engineering firm.
I live my motto every day in remembering the disparity in our society – I currently employ 8 staff comprising of a mix of qualified engineers, technicians and upcoming young professionals.
Whilst this is in no way a huge impact but for these 8 individuals I am committed to dedicate my time, benefit of my experience, the benefits of challenges that can assist them in their own growth, independence and confidence.
The Consulting environment is a tough path to meander – and I recognise my achievements due to the mentorship and guidance I had from previous significant people along my path. For this reason, I devote of myself to their continued growth and success in their own journeys.
At the company we offer job shadowing, short, medium or long-term internships where we train individuals to learn the basics of Engineering, Draughting and the many dynamics of business.
It is always the chicken and egg scenario with graduates – no one wants to hire you as you have no experience – and you cannot get experience until you get experience. We assist to give you the experience and confidence to fly your wings. Or at the very least we try……
I believe strongly in self-development as well and find the most remarkable thing about engineering to be that you learn something new every day.
I have been registered with SAICE for over a decade, completed my professional registration with ECSA 5 years ago and are currently registering with SACPCMP. Our company is registered with CESA, SAIBPP, SAICE and WPN and we believe together we are stronger.
Being able to directly impact the lives of others inspires me – and in so doing I wish to inspire others. We all have the ability for great change inside us – but we sometimes lose sight of that with all that goes on around us. What does it take to be a good role model?
What are the qualities that one needs and what are your Aspirations? For me it’s simple – to be the most honest, helpful and compassionate being you can be – while still being the best at whatever you choose to be. I live the vision of my company – Aspire.
I Aspire to be better in every way, every day and I hope a bit of my enthusiasm and dedication in that rubs off on to my peers.
