I *never* unfollow mutuals

I *always* unfollow anyone that was a mutual but unfollowed me
Occasionally purging the follow list gives more attention to people that you care about. It improves their ability to reach you, and through you, others.

In a way, you are amplifying the message of people that matter
Many people do not follow me, that is absolutely fine

There are plenty I don't follow, this is also fine

However, if someone follows you, and then unfollows you after you follow them back, this stinks of growth hacking nonsense

It also smells of rejection, not fun
To answer the question "if a follow list isn't just a list of people whose tweets you want to read, what is it?" https://twitter.com/BecomingCritter/status/1380548420021157888
The decision not to unfollow doesn't rob you of curation

Lists exist for concentrated engagement, and you can always mute to take a break https://twitter.com/sadalsvvd/status/1380545699968913410
On twitter it's Good not to hold yourself to too high a standard

This creates an inviting environment ("We're not all perfect")

Second, if you tweet something dumb, it allows unenthusiastic followers to unfollow you

It makes engagement self-curating
One useful option, although I don't personally use it, is the softblock

Reserved for extreme cases, softblocking allows you to cut off interaction in both directions

Better than simply unfollowing--it can feel like rejection, but it also feels somewhat "fair"
Like a softblock, a block is also fair

however this feels like a HEAVY rejection. I tend to presume that anyone that blocks me has some contempt for me (or is just an extremely sensitive person).

Despite that, it's still respectable--more respectable than unfollowing a mutual
To give an example of the social dynamics here, I once spent 6 hours praising my mutuals, and I was a little heartbroken to find that one of my favorite mutuals unfollowed me
