I had the honor of attending a Zoom celebration for one of my first mentors tonight. So many wonderful people shared their memories and seeds of wisdom and #leadership advice that this woman planted over the years. Here are some of my favorite #ThingsKarenTaughtUs 1/
Hire great people, give them the tools they need to succeed, and then get out of their way. 2/
Don’t waste people or talent. Give them the opportunity to shine, even if that means encouraging them to change jobs. 3/
Often, the best ideas will come from your audience. They will tell you what they need. Listen to them. 4/
Encourage your teams to get to know each other as people. A weekly coffee as a group can lead to ideas for improving operations and, more importantly, will often lead to great friendships and collegiality. 5/
Good leadership is a matter of influence, not force. 6/
Showing someone you have trust in them, and giving them the space to try and fail and grow and succeed, may mean more than you could ever know. It can change lives. 7/
Good teams push each other and sometimes they push back. They may disagree but those disagreements may lead to great new ideas. That’s okay. It’s actually great! 8/
If you ever find yourself on a team that feels like a family, treasure that time. It’s rare to find that in a career. 9/
And I’ll add one myself: Have you had a wonderful mentor in your life? Take the time to thank them. And then consider if it may be the time to pay it forward. 10/end #mentorship
