thread on why eddie diaz from 9-1-1 is autistic, made by someone who is autistic! #911onFOX @911onFOX @ryanAguzman
disclaimer: this thread is inspired by this one linked! thank you hunter for the amazing thread and giving me the idea :] https://twitter.com/adhdbuck/status/1364991789904637953
1. he has a difficulty with regulating his emotions. when buck tried to sue the department, someone who eddie really trusted and loved, he had an obvious hard time trying to deal with his anger. he turned to street fighting because he didn’t know how else he could let his +
emotions out.
2. he has a consistency of daily routines. he has a job where his schedule is pretty consistent, he has someone that watches christopher when he goes to said job, he has people that he sees and he works with every day. when these consistencies are messed up, i.e when the +
lawsuit happened with buck and someone that he was used to seeing and being with everyday wasn’t there anymore, his immediate reaction and outburst was anger, and when christopher would go to camp for 2 weeks, he wouldn’t have had that consistency of dropping chris off every +
morning or taking him to school.
3. he doesn’t express his emotions very well. although the could be feeling a variety of different emotions, he can’t find a good way to cope with them on the outside. hence, why he started street fighting. during the earthquake episodes when he was checking his phone to check +
on chris, you couldn’t read what was wrong with him on his face, only through his body language. you know logically that he was obviously worried about his son, but you wouldn’t have been able to read that on his facial expressions alone.
4. he doesn’t understand things that don’t make sense to him, and he has a hard time understanding other people’s view on things.. an extremely common autistic trait is strictly disregarding things that don’t make sense to you. if it doesn’t make sense to you, it doesn’t exist. +
like in that episode where the team felt like the universe was against them because of the word “quiet”. eddie was extremely persistent and demanding in telling everyone that the universe doesn’t scream, that it doesn’t care what you do. he didn’t understand why everyone +
believed in it, because he didn’t understand it himself.
5. he gets frustrated when there’s a change in his routine. i know i mentioned it before, but this is a HUGE autistic trait. he was angry with buck during the lawsuit, not necessarily with buck himself, but because someone he cared for and was used to seeing every single day, +
who was apart of his routine, wasn’t there anymore and he didn’t know how to adjust and cope.
6. he acts and talks the same way he does with everyone, whether at work, at home, or with his extended family. consistency is important for autistic people, and eddie wouldn’t see the need to put up a front or act different in front of different groups of people.
7. he only has interests in doing a few things, such as working and being with his family. trying new things is difficult for autistic people, as it disturbs their sense of routine. it took eddie a while to take ana out on a date because it was different from the one or two +
things that he does daily.
8. i don’t know if you guys notice, but the mf stims! something that was really prevalent for me when watching is that he tends to press his lips together in a straight line a lot, which can be read as a stim.
in conclusion, eddie exhibits many signs and traits of autism and i consider him to be highly autistic coded :] this means a lot to me and i’m sure many other autistic viewers of the show!!
