Buckle up Nerds, this is going to be a long thread. WHAT COUNTS AS "WRITING". I am going to preface this ONCE by screaming WRITING IS JUST THINKING ON PAPER.
With that:
Writing = writing
Reading = writing
Journaling = writing
Middle school diary = writing
#PipelineAuthors
Thinking about that huge paper that's due next week = writing.
Cooking = writing
Putting out the literal fire in your oven because you forgot the nachos were on BROIL= writing
Working out = writing

#PipelineAuthors
Refilling your water bottle as an excuse to walk away from
your desk = writing (okay getting tired of typing "= writing" so all the rest COUNTS AS WRITING:

Watching your favorite movie
Watching TV
Missing Blockbuster
Playing with your dogs
Making something
3/?

#PipelineAuthors
Listening to podcasts
Yoga
Bull fighting
MY POINT: is that even when you're not literally BUTT IN CHAIR, your brain is still working stuff out. So there's method to the madness re: the advice to "just walk away for a bit"

#PipelineAuthors
Why? Because the physical act of typing/ink on paper is the TIP of the tip of the iceberg. It's just one mode our lizard brain works stuff out for us.

YES I AM ABSOLUTELY OVERSIMPLIFYING THIS. But why? Because

I watched too many of my adult students run themselves into the ground with self-inflicted guilt that they "hadn't started their paper yet".
Had they forgotten it?
No.
Where they thinking about it?
Big fat yes.

6/?

#PipelineAuthors
So if WRITING = THINKING ON PAPER it is safe to conclude that the thinking needs to happen first. And constantly. Which is already happening because you're probably a human.

7/?

#PipelineAuthors
THEREFORE: You're "writing" constantly. Even when you're not PHYSICALLY writing. And my hand to Cthulhu they're not going to takeaway your birthday if you don't write butt-in-chair everyday #PipelineAuthors
So PLEASE please please go easy on your writing self. Take an hour off. Get a new water bottle. Pivot to reading for a day. Then binge a show similar to what you're writing. Because can't pour from an empty cup. No one can.

This reminds me: @SPMJM I'm going to order us some fox water bottles for giveaways because I'm Aquarius and writers need water and the world needs writers.

Okay, @jeannevb. Since it was the runner-up choice, I am now going to disclose a few middle school confessions. MOAR THREAD INCOMING

#PipelineAuthors
In episode zero of @ThePodcastTitle I talk about my 5th grade teacher accusing me of plagiarism. What I didn't say was that she was that my some of classmates jumped to my defense and I burst into tears. Not because they defended me but 11/?

Because I didn't know they cared and also felt that injustice. It was a small school, small class and we'd all known each other since kindergarten. But that was the first time the gloves came off. #PipelineAuthors 12/?
During the Religion final exam I was so bored that I just started gazing off into nothingness, and Michael K. thought I was cheating off is paper and hasn't spoken to me since and I still feel terrible #PipelineAuthors 13/?
In 6th grade gym I watched a kid pull the fire alarm. I never told because I was the new kid & it was my first month in a public school & I didn't know what the rules were but it was Buffalo, NY so it was near freezing temps and no one had time to get coats 14/? #PipelineAuthors
In 7th grade I created a "cheat code" for a taxonomy unit by first listing out everything I wanted to have on a "cheat sheet" but not a sheet. So listed out the definitions and words etc...And made up a squiggle symbol for each and then #PipelineAuthors 15/?
carved those symbols into the long flat edges of a #2 pencil with an even smaller pencil tip. Except by the time I had carved these pictograms into it, I had freaking memorized everything anyway. #PipelineAuthors 16/?
The summer after 7th grade I signed up for a swim-a-thon. Went around my neighborhood, got pledges per lap, etc. I might not be athletic but it turns out I'm a damn good swimmer. I felt so bad about how much $ this one guy was going to owe so I never collected #PipelineAuthors 🏊‍♀️
