So, as someone who's Nordic, I believe that the Thor movies did an amazing job, but I still think people should learn more about their fav characters! This thread is a simple analysis and comparison between Thor in the MCU and Norse Mythology! I hope this helps:
1 - Odin
I'm aware that in the MCU, Odin is portrayed as a terrible person and in Norse Mythology he wasn't that different either. But the question I see most often, is what's his name.
1 - Odin
We all know that Asgardians last names are their father's name and "son", the main example being Thor Odinson. Odin's full name is Odin Allfather. Allfather is used for a god with most importance. The MCU included this in the first Thor movie when he's casting Thor out.
2 - gods
I see many people wonder if all Asgardians are gods, and yes, they are. While all of them are gods, all with the same abilities. Only a few have actual powers, such as Thor with controlling the weather, Heimdall with his enhanced senses, Sif with teleportation, etc.
3 - Immortality
I've seen many wonder if they're immortal, and no, they're not. In Norse Mythology, gods age as humans do until their early twenties. After that, they age at a much slower rate, living up to thousands of years. Norse Mythology doesn't believe in immortality.
4 - Their Hair
One of the main things Norse Mythology and Vikings have in common is their hair. When they lose a loved one, they cut their hair and braid it with their own. The MCU respects that in Age of Ultron and Ragnarok when we see Thor with a strand of Loki's hair braided.
4 - Their Hair
Asgardians are known for having really long hair, it's their most important trait for Norse gods. Gladly, the first two Thor movies honoured that with Thor's long hair, and as much as I love Ragnarok, it was sad to see them not respect it.
5 - Humans
I've seen a few people wonder what would happen if Thor and Jane had kids. Nothing would happen, as there would be no side effects on the kids DNA. Asgardians and humans are allowed to have kids together, the kids being considered demigods in Asgard.
6 - Sif
In Norse Mythology, Sif is a much more important character than the MCU portrays her to be. As a little girl, she was kidnapped and Thor offered to take her place, the two then were able to leave unharmed and they feel in love.
6 - Sif
Although the two broke up multiple times over thousands of years, they always come back to each other, eventually getting married and having kids. Sif is the goddess of fertility and she is the mother of the god of archery.
6 - Sif
Her most famous story is with Loki. As kids, he was so jealous of her, that while she slept, he cut off all of her golden hair. Once Thor found out, he threatened to break every bone in Loki's body unless he replaced her hair.
6 - Sif
Thor and Loki agreed to fabricate her hair from gold, using magic to make it grown on her head. But Loki betrayed them, and used darkness to make her new hair, and since then, Sif has her famous long dark hair.
7 - Loki
Although in the MCU, Loki is portrayed as Thor's brother and Odin's adopted son, in Mythology there is no such thing. Loki is Odin and Thor's friend, and the only thing that the MCU kept from Mythology was that Laufey was his father.
7 - Loki
Loki is the only god in Norse Mythology that can change his sex and shape. He can change into Lady Loki, and he can also change into animals. Because of that, he is able to have many kinds of kids himself.
7 - Loki
In Norse Mythology, he takes the form of Lady Loki and ends up having a daughter, Hela. In the MCU, Hela is his sister. In Norse Mythology, he also takes the form of an animals, having kids with a serpent, the most famous one being Fenrir, the wolf from Ragnarok.
8 - Locations
If any MCU fans want to visit an important location, they can. If they want to visit Jotunheim, all they have to do is go to Jotunheimen, Norway. Also known as the Mountain of Giants.
8 - Locations
Something that the MCU really respected was humans getting into Asgard. In Norse Mythology, humans can't see Asgard and to get there they would need to be accompanied by an Asgardian.
9 - The Hammer
In Norse Mythology, only Thor can lift Mjolnir, even Odin being unable to lift it. While in the MCU, many characters are able to lift it, both the comics and the movies.
9 - The Hammer
I've seen many people wonder why Groot can pick up Stormbreaker in Infinity War. Anyone can pick up Stormbreaker because Odin didn't cast the "worthy" spell on it. The only reason why people couldn't pick up the hammer was because of that spell.
9 - The Hammer
Before the spell is cast in Thor, anyone could pick it up. In Norse Mythology, the "worthy" spell doesn't exist and no one can pick it up except for Thor.
I hope this thread was helpful and I hope you guys understood a bit more! In case you have any questions, fell free to ask them, I'll do my best to answer! I love studying Norse Mythology and I can't wait to see what you guys think of this!
Please remember that Thor, Loki, Sif and all the other gods aren't fictional characters that Marvel created. They are based on Norse Mythology and it's extremely rude to disrespect this religion.
Also please keep in mind that I'm not a professional in Norse Mythology, I simply did my research and I plan to study this in University, so if I said anything really wrong here, please let me know!! All the love!
