I also think there’s a small but meaningful % of GOP voters who held their nose for a *short-term* devil’s bargain in 2016 & even 2020, but didn’t think they were signing up for a *permanent* GOP realignment to nihilistic Trumpian politics. What they do now is a big wild-card. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1380190906150752258
As late as last fall, I was having conversations with some Republican friends who still clearly thought their party would largely revert to its pre-Trump state once he was out of the picture. I gave up hope of that a year or two ago...but it’s going worse than even *I* expected.
The Jan. 6 insurrection & the Twitter ban created the *perfect* off-ramp for a clean break. Instead, they’ve doubled down on the same dangerous demagogic nihilism that created 1/6. It’s no longer possible to pretend this is just a “Trump problem.” The party is rotten to its core.
And there are some folks, I think, who could stomach 4 or 8 years of short-term moral compromise for what they saw as long-term gains, but may not be able to stomach supporting *permanent* rottenness in the GOP. It’s a small %, but it mattered in GA & it may matter going forward.
