What must be kept in mind as Rudin is brought to the forefront is that he is not alone in his behavior.
The tolerating of his bad behavior is directly tied to money and other forms of privilege, but acting like his removal will fix the system that led to him is disingenuous.
It is undeniable that the arts have historically embraced "tortured geniuses" in all directions. The acceptance, and at times encouragement of bad behavior by those involved in the arts is nothing new. It didn't start with Broadway, and it won't end there either.
Yes, hold Scott Rudin accountable. His behavior is abhorrent, and he deserves consequences for his actions.
But don't act like removing him is the answer to the overarching problem, which is that society has a fetish for workaholics, aggressive perfectionism, & toxic leadership.
I don't have answers - none of us do. What has to happen, in theatre and in all artforms, is a reckoning with the structures that support his behavior.
Suffering doesn't make a good artist, and intimidation doesn't earn respect.
