We need to stop the Canadian seal hunt.
Canada's annual commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet.

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of seals have been killed annually for their fur.
97% of the seals killed are babies under 3 months of age.
Less than 6,000 fishermen from Canada's east coast actively participate in the seal hunt each year.

They make, on average, 1/20th of their incomes from seal hunting and the rest from commercial fisheries.
Seals are killed primarily for their fur, which is used to produce fashion garments and other items.

The Canadian marine mammal regulations that govern the hunt stipulate sealers may kill seals with wooden clubs, hakapiks (large ice-pick-like clubs) and guns.
The main sealskin processing plant in Canada deducts $2 from the price they pay for the skins for each bullet hole they find.

Therefore sealers try not to shoot seals more than once.

As a result, wounded seals are often left to suffer in agony.
The Canadian government could easily shut down the seal hunt and replace it with economic alternatives, such as a Federal buyout of the commercial sealing industry or expand marine ecotourism in the area such as seal watching.
The Canadian government also uses tax payer's money to contribute towards the seal hunt.

More than $20 million in subsidies were provided to the sealing industry between 1995 - 2001.
Some fishing industry lobby groups claim seals must be culled to protect fish stocks.

The scientific community agrees the true cause of the depletion of fish stocks is from human caused fishing.
Urge the Canadian government to end the commercial seal hunt and protect seals.
