What POC/BIPOC Readers Wish White Authors Knew When Writing POC/BIPOC Characters (via you guys)

- Write us as actual people and not just for diversity points.
- We’re actual humans.
- We are not just stereotypes and everything we do does not have to do with our skin color.
- Do not compare our skin to food.
- Don’t make the character struggle to fit in with white people.
- Even if we’re white passing our culture still talks to us and we love our roots.
- Our identities makes us one with the people we share them with.
- Most POC don’t like stories that revolve around using our race as a crutch.
- Not all black girls are mean and scary.
- Not all Latinx/Hispanic/Mexicans start talking in Spanish randomly or have an accent.
- Pay attention to little cultural things.
- Middle Eastern characters aren’t always the bad guys.
- STOP SEXUALIZING US. We& #39;re not here to fulfill your sexual fantasies.
- We struggle a lot with how people perceive our individual proximity to whiteness.
- Embrace their race/ethnicity/differences without revolving the character’s personality/arc around it.
- Include our culture and represent the differences.
- A range of personalities.
- More biracial characters that aren’t half X and half white.
- DO YOUR RESEARCH and don’t use stereotypes.
- Appear more in fantasy (if you have dragons and elves you can have POC/BIPOC characters).
- Find love.
- Be MC’s or play important roles.
- Be mindful of how you portray your POC characters.
- There can be asshole POC characters but make sure to have good ones too.
- Talk to POC/BIPOC people.
- Make them complex: give them flaws, weaknesses, strengths, and problematic at times.
- Not all POC raised in Western society are completely Westernized.

I didn’t expect this to get the attention it’s getting. Something about this thread was about to my attention and I want to address it.
POC/BIPOC do not want white authors writing the experience of POC/BIPOC people because they won’t accurately represent it.
