This is wild. If you do make it through to the end you will see that the 400 richest Americans have $3.2TRILLION in wealth.

I’m gonna thread what could be done with a fraction of that wealth: https://twitter.com/artthestone/status/1379833233743970305
With 6% of that we could vaccinate every single person on earth for COVID-19 & they’d still $40billion richer than before the pandemic began.

With 3% of that we could permanently eradicate malaria (2/3rds of malaria deaths are children under age 5, btw).
All delinquent medical debt could be bought for 2.5%. That means it could come off of people’s credit report which impacts housing, employment, and borrowing.
With 5.3% every American living in poverty could get a one-time subsidy of $10k per family or $7k per individual. Studies show people living in poverty use cash influxes to improve their lives by going back to school, paying for childcare, gain transportation, etc.
With 7.5% of the wealth controlled by just 400 people, clean water and a toilet/latrine could be provided to everyone on earth without access. It would prevent cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
39.6% of that money could provide paid maternity/paternity leave to every American for the next 100 years.

Paid parental leave is estimated to cost about $12billion/yr. Thats 0.39% of the wealth controlled by 400 American. Thats only 5% of the wealth they accrued in 2020 alone.
With 40%, every household in America could’ve received $10,000 to stay home during the pandemic so people weren’t forced to choose between going back to work prematurely or paying their bills.

Less than half the wealth of 400 people could’ve helped millions.
With 60% we could do everything in this thread. By redistributing the wealth, millions of lives would be saved. Millions more would have their lives bettered. The whole human race could advance.

AND ALL 400 WOULD STILL BE BILLIONAIRES.
A reminder that you can’t even fill a 747plane with the number of people who hold $3.2trillion in wealth.
Whether you’re a doctor, lawyer, hedge fun manager, etc. your lifetime earnings will come nowhere near just one person on the list (Jeff Bezos).
The yearly cost of healthcare for a family of 4 is minuscule to the amount of wealth just 1 person out of that 400 has. Jeff Bezos made in ONE DAY the cost of a year’s worth of treatment for cancer patients.
Even if you did everything right. You saved, you invested in yourself, invested in stocks, started your own successful business, you owned real estate & investment properties, worked your ass off, etc. and made $200MILLION you’d still just be a drop in the bucket.
I say all this to say that at the very least we should be taxing the ridiculously rich. Don’t believe the hype about not having money to provide social safety nets to people. And aligning your interests with those of people who are unfathomably wealthy is a losing game.
Also a friendly reminder: don’t @ me with your arguments against this because I don’t care about the opinions of people who lack empathy so much that they can’t see that 400 people only (🙄) having $1billion is preferable to millions of people dying/starving.
