THREAD: How Chelsea can play with 4-ATB while preserving the principles of our current 3-4-2-1 system.

Topics discussed:
• Using a 4-2-3-1 / 4-2-1-3
• Using wide wingers instead of inverted forwards.
• Preserving the principles of our 3-4-2-1 system.
The inspiration behind this thread is as a result of our inverted forwards’ poor goal-scoring output.

Therefore, this is a thread on how we can make use of our “wide wingers” (CHO/Puli) instead.
As I said, we’re going to start with a 4-ATB to facilitate this change.

Particularly, using a 4-2-3-1/ 4-2-1-3 as such (with this preferable starting 11):
When playing out from the back, I want my team to build play from wide positions; using a short-pass-diamond as such:

This allows our players to always have nearby quick-passing options and therefore, makes us more resistant to press.
From this diamond, the aim is to get the ball as quickly as possible to what I call, our “CONNECTORS” of play (Kova + Mount).

This is as, these 2 players will be our primary source of relaying balls from our defense to attack. (Through dribbling and/or passing)
This is where things get interesting..

Upon getting the ball to our “connectors” (in red), our LB will have already overlapped, alongside our LW (blue arrow)

Thus leaving a massive gap in defense (black circle)
How do we compensate for that gap?

You guessed it! We effortlessly phase into a back 3.

With a 3-1-2-4 set up as such:
Here, our “connectors” will have the license to:

a) Dribble out of pressure, until a certain point. (red arrows)

b) Then supply passes in behind to our attacking 4 (yellow arrows)
Now, upon delivering the ball to our attacking 4:

- Mason will have the license to join our attack (on the right) to make up an attacking 5.

While

- Kova will be instructed to sit as is, on the halfway line, along Kante.

This will effortlessly transition us to a 3-2-5.
NB: Mason joining the attack on the right is to allow CHO to adopt a more wider RW position.

I personally prefer CHO as a wide RW, as his chance creating via low and high crosses from those positions is impeccable.

Along with his ability to get in behind players with his pace
Here our attacking 5 can integrate as they are used to doing right now.

(Examples of combinations on the RHS (pic 1) and LHS (pic 2) below)
Furthermore, I think that a more mobile no.9 is needed in this system to get up and down the pitch quickly, that’s why I opted for Tammy instead of Oli.

Also, I want a pure no.9 who will engage the two CBs ALL GAME. That’s why I chose Tammy instead of Kai.
NOW: In the case that we lose the ball up top, it is vital that the 3 circled players (in red) counter-press aggressively.

This buys time for CHO and ALONSO to get back to help our defensive 5 players defend the transition.
As Alonso & CHO run back to the middle of the field (to LM and RM) we will briefly adopt a 3-4-3 defensive shape.

This is in efforts to win back the ball in the middle of the field, and not allow the opposition to enter our final third.
However, in the case that the opposition survives our 3-4-3 in midfield and gets to our final 3rd,

Alonso will continue his run to LB while CHO will remain put at RM.

This will result in us transitioning into a 4-4-2 compact low block as such:
Upon setting up a 4-4-2 low block, we also have the option to allow CHO to drop back even further as RWB, to form a back 5. (This is only if needed! E.g. playing against a very dangerous team like Bayern or Man City)
This illustration shows a way we can start with a 4-2-3-1/4-2-1-3 in order to get our wingers to flourish in wider positions (mainly CHO as RW).

WHILE STILL KEEPING many of the “same principles” that our current 3-4-2-1 system has
This is something Leeds does a lot during games. They often build play with a 4-1-4-1, then transition into a 3-3-1-3 in attack, then finally revert to a 5-3-2 in defense!
Let me know what you all think of these ideas I came up with!
