1.CONTEXT. I was born and brought up in Cowdenbeath. My grandfather was killed in a pit accident, my father was invalided out of the pits and my brother was a sacked miner.

4. I was very ill. I had not yet been diagnosed with bowel cancer but let’s just say that I was probably at my lowest ebb in terms of pain and my capacity to cope without quick access to a loo.

2. It is fair to say that Margaret Thatcher was hated among my family and friends.

3. But I was the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. I received an invitation in that capacity to attend the funeral.
