My Twitter is rarely serious anymore but I’m going to get real for a second. Today Biden announce an executive order for background checks, and expanding red flag laws. I have worked tirelessly for the past 3 years with @Everytown and @MomsDemand for sensible gun laws.
As a gun violence/domestic violence survivor I am so thankful that Biden is taking steps for national gun safety after 25 years of inaction by the federal government.
People always ask me what good background checks will do. Won’t people get a gun regardless? The answer is, maybe. But what if someone buying a gun with the intent to harm themselves has to wait a couple extra hours or even just minutes, that’s extra time to change their mind.
Over 50% of Chicago’s illegal guns come from Indiana. What if we can bring it down to 25%? That’s hundreds of lives saved. Background checks at gun shows will help us get back on track as a nation after 25 years of senseless shootings and valuable lives lost.
Gun violence is not the norm for any other “high income” country in the world. Through my work with SDA I have met mothers who have lost all of their children to gun violence, daughters and sons who lost parents to gun suicide, students who do their homework to gun shots in their
neighborhood. I met a girl who saw a man get shot and killed when she was just 7 years old I met a girl who slept under her bed bc her room was often struck by crossfire I met a man who lost his parents to a murder suicide A woman who was shot many times by an intimate partner
There is so much work left to do because the executive order happening today should’ve happened 25 years ago. If you’re as angry and tired as I am please join us.

If you’re not a student please consider volunteering your time to a moms demand chapter near you. Moms Demand Action is not just moms it’s everyone who is tired of seeing mothers lose their sons and daughters to gun violence https://momsdemandaction.org/join-us/
I’m dedicating today’s win to my dear friend and angel Taylor Derosa. Taylor worked nonstop for this cause in the short time she had here on earth. I miss you, everything we do is in your memory🧡
