The term settler speaks to a very specific group of people who came to these lands to settle and make way for the creation of Canada. We cannot universally apply this term to every non-Indigenous person.
Black and communities of colour, immigrants or refugees are not settlers. Someone being white doesn’t automatically make them a settler. So many of our languages take into consideration and acknowledge the importance of context and relationships.
The harm and impact of European settlement that led to the violent creation of Canada, and their descendants, requires different work and conversations than the work and conversations we need to have with Black and communities of colour, immigrants and refugees.
For me, part of decolonizing means moving beyond generalizations and putting diverse experiences, contexts and stories under a single term towards being intentional and specific with what I’m speaking to.
