I’m thankful for Isayama for bringing this wonderful story to life. It will always have a special place in my heart. My feelings about the finale change absolutely nothing about that. That being said, I will now share my thoughts about the ending of this iconic series.
Like many others, I’m disappointed with the ending. it reminds me a lot of the ending of Mr. Robot. Plenty of hints in the story about many things only to deliver an unconvincing or bad explanation to it that doesn’t make sense or exists solely for shock value.
I’ve been feeling this way for a while but I held back judgment before seeing the ending. it’s not about that it’s tragic or happy or it didn’t go the way I wanted it, I don’t mind any type of ending so long as it’s executed well. But this just feels like a fanfic I wrote.
I knew it was going to end badly when the alliance was formed. Nothing against the idea itself, it’s great! But the execution makes no sense whatsoever. It’s sloppy, They’re buddies and everything’s cool after 1 punch and some spilled soup...ugh give me a break.
Ymir’s motivations and her “love” for king Fritz doesn’t sit well with me for obvious reasons. All the abuse, rape and enslavement lead to love? I won’t talk about this one specifically bc that’s a whole different thread, and I somewhat understand why it’s part of the story.
Armin thanking Eren for genocide? And calling genocide a “transgression”? Mf a transgression is when you get cancelled and make a YouTube apology it’s not for when you commit mass murder. I cringed so hard during the whole scene.
Plenty of wasted potential with characters and relationships between characters. Hanji and Levi friendship was done dirty. Armin and Mikasa’s friendship the same. Annie, historia and Zeke were done dirty. Eren most of all and don’t even get me started on Reiner. v disappointing.
Killing 80% of the world achieved peace with hardly any repercussions for characters who committed atrocities throughout the story. Apparently you end the cycle of hate with more hate. And I KNOW that it didn’t solve “everything” but you know what I mean.
However I do understand that no ending would’ve satisfied an audience of such a popular story. I could be the only one with these thoughts. those are my feelings for now.
