what does tommy need and doesn& #39;t need to address: a thread by a black person (retweets appreciated)
disclaimer, since im not mexican and don& #39;t personally know anybody that can speak on those issues, i will not talk about it. i will be linking a thread on those issues at the end because it is still important. also if you want to add anything to the thread, lmk !
also, the reason why I& #39;m making this thread is because I& #39;ve seen so many that are just saying what he did wrong but aren& #39;t explaining why. if our purpose is to educate, we need to outline why exactly something could be wrong or could not be. not just yell at them to educate it
it isn& #39;t minorities job to educate every single person, however, we can& #39;t also expect for every single person to fully understand why something is wrong, especially if it& #39;s never been fully explained. now, with that being said, onto the thread:
first, the slave jokes: if you don& #39;t know what I& #39;m talking about, here it is: https://twitter.com/idktommyinnit/status/1379161430704979978?s=19">https://twitter.com/idktommyi...
personally, I& #39;m tired of nonblack people being offended on our behalf. I understand that as soon as we hear slaves, we think of black people, however, Tommy wasn& #39;t implying that. it was simply a *joke* that had no correlation to america& #39;s slave history
though i don& #39;t speak for all black people, i find that the fact that making slave jokes isn& #39;t ok unless you& #39;re black really disheartening. there have been other slaves besides the ones in the US and slave jokes shouldn& #39;t be a taboo type of humor.
in conclusion, please stop taking everything so seriously. you& #39;re allowed to laugh at them pfft- /lh
personally, i believe it is a weird joke but it& #39;s not really offensive. i do think tommy should come out and say it was a weird joke, but i personally believe that he wasn& #39;t mocking slurs on anything like that, it was just a bad joke and tasteless,,
if you don& #39;t understand the issue, the problem is that this is very performative. personally, i find Techno& #39;s response worse than tommy, but i still feel like tommy should have added a quick, "yeah guys, sign this petition" or something similar and same with techno.
they should have used their platform to do more that a quick, "murder is bad" and "agreed" and it comes off as really shallow and only doing it to appease their audiences and not because the exact issues, which I& #39;m sure wasn& #39;t their intent but still
in all, i do believe tommy should address this and understand why people are saying it& #39;s performative and he could have done more than just say, "agreed."
here& #39;s a thread that can explain better than i did though: https://twitter.com/elly_phantom/status/1379238816800768004?s=19">https://twitter.com/elly_phan...
all and all, i find that there& #39;s little for Tommy to address on this front and though it would be nice, i understand as to why he hasn& #39;t because there had been a lack of threads fully outlining everything as well as not a fully consensus on what he did wrong
we need to understand that we want our creators to address things, we need to pinpoint what or else they might not fully understand where we are coming from.
also, please don& #39;t use minorities issues and weaponizing them to bring certain creators down. like, no. don& #39;t do that. you& #39;re not helping us at all. you& #39;re making it worse.
in conclusion i hope tommy addresses everything for the sake of the minorities affected
here& #39;s the thread on tommy& #39;s mexican accent: https://twitter.com/drmtrbl/status/1379129645270990858?s=19">https://twitter.com/drmtrbl/s...

also wanna add this seeing as I was asked. again, I& #39;m not mexican so it& #39;s not my place to say if it& #39;s ok or not, but if anybody would like me to add anything to the thread i will, just dm me !! https://twitter.com/dhmuhonk/status/1379125842157174786?s=19">https://twitter.com/dhmuhonk/...
a Mexican dmed me and gave me their opinion on the situation so: "in my opinion the accent is something he should just stop. quackity doing it is appropriate, seeing as he is mexican himself, but seeing tommy as a white man doing the same accent isnt ok. +
mexicans have been ridiculed for their strong accents and pronouncinations for years, and for them to get be a bit for tommy isnt ok."
some input from the comments as well: https://twitter.com/jubilemna/status/1380295937688494080?s=19">https://twitter.com/jubilemna...
thank you to all the mexicans messaging me their opinions and input btw! It means a lot that I& #39;m able to help get your opinions across in any way and give you the space to share them ahh. also, thanks for all the retweets btw, it really does means a lot :]
oh yeah i want to clarify something about slave jokes. there are certain slave jokes you cannot make ofc. like, any slave joke that could refer to black slaves is a no go obviously, like y& #39;all cannot call me a cotton picker,,,
but anything vague/general is fine, which is what tommy did. nobody has done anything like this btw but i just wanna make it clear lol

I don& #39;t think I should have to explain why him making this joke is wrong.. https://twitter.com/ghostburz/status/1380666322095386632?s=19">https://twitter.com/ghostburz...
