just wanted to share the awesome moment yesterday as I was about to be administered a medical test and I said " this is going to be analyzed by (the lab whose work my insurance will cover...not a small, unknown place by any means) and the doctor & nurse were like "what? No."
So I say "well...how much will this cost?" and they are completely baffled
So now we get the billing woman in the front office involved and sh says "I have no idea," which seems...unlikely
So I now have to go track down how to get this test administered by the company that is covered by my (quite good) insurance and remember all 3 of these people laughing at me because I dared to ask in order to avoid paying a surprise couple hundred bucks
Turns out I have to go a completely different place, for which I had to make a whole other appointment, and what I want to know is...how are people who are chronically ill and confused supposed to jump through all these hoops, and how are the care providers this dismissive
I mean, they actually looked at me with these pitying and condescending looks on their faces, like "oh, what a stupid woman, must suck to be unable to just pay whatever bill we send you, how gauche of you bring up the issue of (shudder) money"
The strong implication being that no one has ever even asked such a stupid thing before...I'm (obviously) still really irritated about this
I mean, yes, I could pay the $200-ish bill, but it's the principle of the thing, you know? Especially when it turns out that the place I need to have perform the analysis so it's covered is literally 500 feet up the street; they could have just called a courier, or walked it over
