More testimony from medical experts is expected today in the trial of Derek Chauvin. It's likely to be pretty technical but dealing with some issues at the heart of the case. (1) https://twitter.com/MPRnews/status/1380155916360777732
Dr. Martin Tobin estimates that Chauvin's knee remained on Floyd's neck for three minutes and two seconds after there was zero oxygen left in his body. (2)
Dr. Martin Tobin testifies that “a healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died.” (3)
Tobin says Floyd's "anoxic seizure" indicates severe damage to the brain, and is an involuntary reaction: "The bottom line is you’re seeing that the leg jumps up like that as a result of a fatally low level of oxygen going to the brain." (4)
Tobin says fentanyl wasn't responsible for Floyd's depressed respiration. Carbon dioxide levels in his blood are "solely" explained by the fact that his body was deprived of breathing for nine minutes 50 seconds (until paramedics inserted an airway in ambulance). (5)
The prosecution examination of Dr. Tobin lasted all morning. He seemed to be extremely effective in explaining complicated science so the jurors (and the rest of us) could understand. Defense will cross-examine him after the 1:30 lunch break. (6)
This is an example of how effectively Dr. Tobin put scientific concepts into human terms. (7) https://twitter.com/BrandtMPR/status/1380205339270856706?s=20
Defense attorney Nelson pushes Tobin on things like weight of Chauvin's gear, weight distribution of his knees. Now questioning Tobin on impact of Floyd's health issues. Tells Tobin we don't know much about COVID impact, Tobin replies that we actually do because it's a virus. (8)
Some thoughts in this thread on how defense attorneys should approach expert witnesses (9) https://twitter.com/MaryMoriarty/status/1380232819306205186?s=20
