1. No, not done: God forbid we actually talk honestly about what risks are culturally sanctioned and which ones are forbidden when it comes to young people - young trans people.

Let me tell you about breaking my wrist:
2. 11 years old, fell off a horse (all the joys of school peer pressure and trying to fit in with my bullies, and riding was what you were meant to do.) Really nasty break, surgery, then many years of additional treatment, more surgeries, ruined my plans of being a pianist.
3. But this isn't the most interesting part of the story - what IS is that the hospital ward I found myself in had 4 young adolescents, and each one of us had been thrown from a horse.

One girl had been rolled on - her pelvis crushed. She would never be able to bear children.
4. The surgeon told my parents that if it were up to him he would ban horse-riding, that it was more dangerous than driving a motor cycle, and he was sick of seeing the life-altering damage being done to children and young teenagers.

My parents had had no idea.
5. I think about all of this whipped up moral panic over 'young girls' being 'transed' - the specific scaremongering about them never being able to have children (which isn't even true).

And then I think of that girl in the bed next to mine.
6. My life, my longed-for future, was irrevocably changed because I had no idea about the risks I was taking, my parents didn't know the risks I was taking, and what I was doing (riding) was considered normal. There are no Times columnists, MPs, trying to ban riding.
7. We let young people - we URGE them - to take societally-sanctioned risks. Even risks that could severely injure them, even kill them.

Preventing trans kids from accessing medical care isn't about keeping them safe. It's about trying to stop them from existing.
Thank you to everyone sharing this - I would say check my soundcloud, except it's better to check iTunes/Amazon/bookstores worldwide if you like my work.

But it would mean the world if you could donate here to help support trans youth in the UK: https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/transgender-lives/
The @GoodLawProject's Trans Fund has already had one major victory, but there's so much more to fight for - and we're fighting against well funded opponents who want to legally restrict the rights of all trans people, of all ages, across the UK. We can't afford to let them.
