someone within DSA the other day told me that they don't view entertainment/sports unions as the same as other unions because entertainers aren't on the "shop floor" and i think it's cute how some of you think my unionized labor is just leisure because i make your leisure content
this was specifically in the context of me talking about my cousin in the NHL who has sustained insane physical injuries that will haunt him for life, and spent countless hours conditioning himself to be a peak athlete. that's not considered labor i guess. that's bourgeois
i think some of you really don't know what goes into art/performance on the labor end and you should re-think that! performers, actors, sports figures are (most of the time) not paid to maintain their bodies. it does take a toll on you.
i work in TV. you watch TV for fun. i watch TV for fun too, but don't think that i am working for fun. i am working in TV to sell my labor at the end of the day, and no matter how bourgeois you think that is, i am still being exploited by capital.
i'm still ruminating on this thinking about all of the set accidents i've seen colleagues experience. like literally losing limbs because of production accidents. and that is not the shop floor apparently!
