By the time the siren sounded, the first atomic bomb to be used in war had already dropped.
In a blinding flash, and with temperatures as hot as the sun, the bomb detonated. It destroyed a 5-mile radius, killing an estimated 80,000 people.
Tens of thousands more later died. China
"I knew we did the right thing because when I knew we'd be doing that I thought, yes, we're going to kill a lot of people, but by God we're going to save a lot of lives," Tibbets told the writer Studs Terkel in a 2002 interview. "We won't have to invade [Japan]."

Beser:“Younger generations do not comprehend what was going on in 1945, the Bataan Death March, the Rape of Nanking, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, the Sacking of Manila, and all of the other more sordid Japanese deeds.....”
There wasn’t even an attempt to hit a military zone in Japan.
A war crime against another war criminal?
85% of Americans approved of dropping atomic bombs in 1945; this percentage dropped to 57% 60 years later.
