It’s certainly not lost on me, a queer person, that a global pandemic that affected “everyone” spurred the development of an mRNA vaccine in *record time* and that that mRNA technology is now being used to develop a vaccine for AIDS nearly 40 years after that epidemic started.
Covid has been going on for about a year and a half and we now have SEVERAL life saving vaccines. AIDS started showing up in gay/trans communities in the late 1970s and it took a fucking DECADE for the worst President ever to even utter the word AIDS.
In January 2020 it was estimated that Covid had a 1-3% fatality rate. In 1985 (and if left untreated), AIDS had/s a 100% fatality rate.
It’s just that all the people dying of AIDS were f@gs. Most straight people only started marginally caring when a not-gay young white boy contracted it by accident.
And just to put a coda on this, millions of people lost their lives to aids. Beautiful people. Incredible people. A huge loss to the global community and to the cause of queer and gay rights. All because straight people in positions of leadership thought we were icky.

PS everyone arguing with me about the specifics of mRNA and nitpicking every goddamn little detail is clearly missing the fucking point. Where there is a will (and a boatload of money) there is a way.
