Since I'm still getting tons of replies I thought I should make the most of it with a few polls- thread🧵
Mary's mother dies of a cancer. The cancer is predicted by a single gene. If you have this gene, you have an 80% chance of developing this cancer. Mary chooses one embryo, at random that does not have this cancer gene to become pregnant. What do you think of what Mary did?
Laura has 2 sons and wants her third child to be a daughter. She screens her husband's sperm so she is 80% likely to have a daughter. What do you think of what Laura did?
Laura (from above), instead of screening her husband's sperm, decides to get pregnant naturally. She finds out she is pregnant with a boy and, because she doesn't want a third son, chooses to abort to try to get pregnant with a girl. What do you think of what Laura does?
Your gay friends, Simon and Sam are having children with an egg donor, Sue. They meet Sue personally and tell you they want her eggs because she is "smart and attractive". They pay her $30,000 and have two children with her eggs. What do you think of what Simon and Sam did?
After your friends Sam and Simon (from above) tell you they want to use Sue's eggs to have babies because she is particularly attractive and smart- do you stay friends with Sam and Simon?
Bethany has Huntington's disease ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington%27s_disease#Genetic_mutation) which means her children have a 50% chance of inheriting it from her- she chooses an embryo through IVF, at random, that does not have the gene for Huntington's disease. What do you think of what Bethany did?
The polls ⬆️above ⬆️ are inspired by these quote tweets, which almost all said "it's eugenics"- so I'm wondering what the polling will say https://twitter.com/sentientist/status/1379553825971900419?s=20
In case the "at random" part confuses you- here is the explanation https://twitter.com/sentientist/status/1379809301099864066
Say, for the sake of argument, that Lisa has a form of attention deficit that has a specific genetic basis. She struggles to focus for long periods. Lisa does IVF and chooses an embryo that doesn't have this genetic deficit to implant. What do you think of what Lisa did?
