The questions on the Indian Census should be more nuanced to identify such people. The frequently touted ~80% Hindu population often incorrectly counts atheists, agnostics, DMK rationalists, Jaggi-ites, Sarva-Dharma-Sama-Bhav-ites etc https://twitter.com/Bipin64805424/status/1379719168279318528
On an old account of mine, I had posted a similar suggestion.

The census shd ask whether the person has visited his place of worship on a weekly basis. Most Ms and Xs will answer in the affirmative, since they visit their places of worship on each Friday and Sunday respectively.
Dindus however, dont visit their places of worship frequently. In Dindus, faith stems from a desperate situation, and faith vapourises along with the situation. This week alone, we have seen multiple tweets about people refusing to donate money to "greedy pujaris."
Some might argue that constraints such as "visit temple every week" are quite Abrahamic, and such constraints will erode at the "beauty of sanatan dharam," but I disagree.
Even if we were to believe that India is 80% Hindu, it is not ideologically 80% Hindu. Abrahamic religions are predatory by nature, while we have always been quite inward looking.
The birth of Hindu fundamentalism was a response to the predatory, dogmatic, intrusive and exclusivist nature of other religions.
India is not a country with 80% Hindu population, instead India is a country where 80% of the population has Hindu names.
