Another year, another Catholic School fundraiser that singles out the poor kids.
Last year, my then-6yo daughter came home crying because all but she and one other kid in her class were taken to the cafeteria to drink hot chocolate and watch a movie.

My 6yo looked at me and said, “Mommy, what did I do wrong? Why couldn’t I get the treat and watch the movie?”
She is a wonderful child and did nothing wrong. But she was singled out because we don’t have a large network of wealthy friends. Try explaining that to a 6yo.

She was six. years. old. How do they expect a small child to understand “it’s not you, honey, mommy didn’t send us ten names of people we could send fundraising letters to...”
Especially when mommy and daddy don’t HAVE ten people they’d feel comfortable sending that letter to.

So I sent a level, but strong email. We had a meeting, where I felt humiliated that they didn’t understand why I couldn’t participate.
I had to say, “sorry, I WORK FOR THIS PARISH and this is our only income because my husband is in school, &most of our friends work for the Church, too.”
I brought up that maybe diversifying the fundraising committee to be more than comfortable, two-parent families might help.

They promised that this wouldn’t happen again.
But Thursday is the same thing: all the kids whose parents sent in 10 names get to wear pajamas. A few days later, kids whose parents sent in 20 names get a dress down day and ice cream.

This time, my almost-8yo didn’t care.
But my 5yo came home crying.
If Catholic schools can’t sincerely make efforts to include kids with diverse families, why should I pinch pennies and loan money to send them there until my husband is done with school?

Thanks to everyone offering to be added to our girls’ list— unfortunately, the deadline has passed. We’ve come up with other ways to make sure they know how special and loved they are!
