Day 18 of the #DerekChauvinTrial has started with motions about admissibility of videos from the aftermath period.
Content advisory - serious violence and language expected at trial
First day of the second week in the trial has begun. Judge Cahill is swearing in the jury, and he mentioned how each of them received a handout and he is now going to ask them questions without it being broadcast.
The court makes the finding there was no jury misconduct on a matter that the judge is not specifying. Nelson evidently initiated this matter because of officers coming in and testifying about restraint and use of force.
Nelson is concerned that the state is pigeonholing expert testimony about use of force from officer testimony. Judge Cahill mentioned that the previous law enforcement officers' testimony that the use of force was inappropriate is allowed to stay.
Judge Cahill reminds the court that George Floyd's state of mind is not relevant, but Derek Chauvin's state of mind and intent is. Therefore any training Chauvin had is relevant.
Nelson is concerned about testimony about MPD trainings because Chauvin may not have been trained on the specific power point presentations or other training materials being testified about.
Schleicher responds and says that the State can show the titles of the trainings, and have the trainer explain what curriculum happens on each day. Judge Cahill agrees that the State is providing adequate foundation.
Nelson continues to argue against the training. He says that there is an MPD training on nerves and joint suppression, and Nelson says Chauvin may not have received that specific training.
