doing this challenge, and chronicling it in this thread. let's go. https://twitter.com/DeckardTheGecko/status/1376519515534548993
1. Vektroid - Color Ocean Road

vektroid is one of the best electronic music producers working today, but you already know that. COR is that blissful kind of party album that only she can make, featuring the most unique cover of Sexual Healing.
2. Dreams West - s/t
a little over a year after Eccojams, and this Charlotte-based act was already championing the sounds of broken transmission, future funk, and flipping the hell out of their samples. early in the game & ahead of the curve
3. Desired - Lovestory

the best future funk always sounds like the best aerobics routine or a fun night out, and Desired delivers with a party set that’s sweet and to the point
4. Sentidos Apuestos - Milenial

infusing the spirit vaporwave with Latin pop is a shot in the arm that the enthusiasts must acknowledge. The Latino artists within really shaped a lot, and this is one example of vapor as its best self.
5. t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 - 肉体からの離脱

tp's famously divisive experiment to sample without melody is worth at least one listen. unusual and admittedly overlong, but a unique extension of his formula.
6. Contact Lens - AllNighter

with an hour's worth of lowkey beats that aren't out of place on a Screwtape, Contact Lens' early cuts always harbored a specific type of nostalgia that only those in the Culture could recognize, and it always worked
7. Windows 98の - これは魂のために

vaportrap/dreampunk are very easy labels. this project early in Dream Catalogue's life has more in common with the most chilling of industrial music. sucessfully fuses airy with oppressive, capped off with a bold 18-minute drone.
8. chris††† - no lives matter

an intentionally edgy title to etch an image of grief and unchecked rage at the world through the mind of the terminally online. chris††† is one of the best plunderphonics artists working today, turning meme material into strong catharsis.
9. DARKPYRAMID - A Heart Full Of Love

not all that different from a lot of HKE's ambient/dreampunk oriented sound, though it comes closest to a similar cinematic atmosphere as his work in 2814. or maybe that's cuz of the Blade Runner samples.
10. Siddiq - Arnecia Hawkins

though his collab with Vektroid remains his most popular work, Siddiq’s Screw/r&b influenced solo material speaks to a certain overlooked audience in the genre. this album is the millennial black perspective distilled into a brief sound.
11. 音 LIGHT システム - Buy Milk

not many vaportrap releases manage to sound both old and modern, but this tape borders on hypnogogic pop with its seamless fusion of retro samples and percussion that works to undercut rather than dominate.
12. HELLCOM - Magazine

vaporwave and glitch come to a center in this atmospheric album, collecting samples that all lead up to the possible circumstances of Y2K being a reality. it's one that's cold with snippets of information stumbling over itself in perfect chaos.
13. 猫 シ Corp. - OASYS 博物館

not cat system's most essential, and honestly more redundant by comparison, but the vibes still carry on like a mall that never ends and expands into the infinite.
14. §E▲ ▓F D▓G§ - STORM MEMORIES

ocean grunge always seemed like one of the goofier subgenres, and yet it bore fruit in this release. the selections of 90s alt rock samples make for inspired sounds that range from cloudy ambient to hard-knocking beats
15. 식료품groceries - HOUSEWARES

a more diverse and experimental counterpart to the artist’s mallsoft staple Yes! We’re Open, HOUSEWARES has color of its own where the muzak becomes pleasantly distorted, like the unchanged playlist of a decade old supermarket.
16. Equip - I Dreamed Of A Palace In The Sky

replicating all the emotional peaks and valleys of old RPGs, Equip's debut is a passionate recollection of those sessions of childhood favorites that some can only return to via longplays.
17. luxury elite - fantasy

the classical vaporwave structure can still work, and lux proves it with consistent releases of jams, grooves, and breaks meant to be a soundtrack to the many attractions and locations of a spent era.
18. Western Digital - Wasted Digital

brilliant name for the release aside, there's a meticulousness to this project that seems readymade for a late night alone, looking over an unnamed city. if lux elite's world class is the wealthy urban sound, this is the average joe.
19. Giant Claw - Deep Thoughts

utopian virtual can either be exciting or boring. this straddles the line of passable, progressing only in instrumentation more than mood. as far as MIDI-symphonies go, this is fun enough.
20. R23X - VELTAHL

glitchy beats to accompany late nights spent on the PS1 for some idle skill grinding. evocative image, but R23X's craft in the genre produces work that remind us how the distant future is implied through the medium of music.
21. death's dynamic shroud - VIRTUAL UTOPIA EXPERIENCE

always dedicated to exploring vaporwave through a variety of sounds, dds find themselves creating a digital heaven through manipulating folk music. as one expects from the collective, it's unique, beautiful, and masterful.
22. M a l i b l u e - just end it ✓✓✓

described by the artist as a "mix for the apocalypse, inspired by Nike's advertising prowess and the meme of the same name." with eeire degradation of samples coming off like an accelerationist sound poem, it's a fitting description.
23. 18 Carat Affair - Spent Passions 2

the dips into pop on some of the tracks that revolve around (who I presume is) the artist vocally riffing are the most unique touches on an otherwise standard broken transmission release. as common with the subgenre, listen at night.
24. b e g o t t e n 自杀 - (hushwave) - 治愈它

the story behind this artist's identity is said to be fascinating, though i admit, i know none of it (not a member of the Pad Gang). that being said, one doesn't need to know much to find this a chilly listening experience.
25. Napolian & Computer Dreams - S/T

mechnical yet funky synthpop meeting traditional vaporwave, this early split marked one of the first collaborations under the banner of this new microgenre, and somehow stays consistently enjoyable
26. S U R F I N G - INCUBO™

awful bold for the Australian duo to keep a foot in the chillwave precursor this strong into the 2010s, but the followup to Deep Fantasy, as short as it is, still has worth as a short, hazy trip, harkening images of DePalma's Miami.
27. wosX - Brasil World Cup 2034

some decent bangers scattered about the length, but hard to find it as anything other than ultra-accessible reggaetón with less of the flourish and desire to really get moving.
28. $PL▲$H ¢LUB 7 - SYSTEM32

despite the mixing being on the gimmicky side with the clipping and deep bass, the unique sample choices were somewhat pulling me in. then came that Diana Ross sample. it's a joke, isn't it?
29. Lindsheaven Virtual Plaza - Nordwrong

a reminder of the talent that was lost in the vapor community, Nordwrong is a rare dynamic release in the genre that's ambient at times, groovy at others, and stays moody. RIP.
30. 3D Blast - Music: Here to Stay

the best saved for last, honestly. like an Avalanches release for the internet age, Music: Here to Stay is as affirming as its title, showcasing the joy of sound through a tight collection of recognizable samples used to their fullest.
