since its autism awareness month heres a thread of more stuff aside from autism speaks + autistic symbols! ++
1. do not baby autistic people. we're not dumb, we have a different mindset. its very weird how some allistics will instantly think of you like some poor helpless baby once they find out youre autistic- we dont need to be coddled 24/7. stop that.
2. autism speaks is very much a hate group! they believe autism is a curable disease and have only 1 autistic person on their team. do not support them! SO heres a good alternative! https://autisticadvocacy.org/
3. not all people with autism are white 4 year old boys, and autism is severely underdiagnosed in afab + black people due to medical discrimination and lack of research. get the idea that we're all white boys in kindergarten out of your head
4. also just because we are not constantly having a meltdown does not make us any less autistic!!!! i am literally a young adult!! i am not having meltdowns 24/7!!
5. autism is a spectrum. we all experience and express it differently, even if its not how you might think autism is. we live with it, you do not. do not think we're "not really autistic" because we dont meet your "standard" for what autism is.
6. on that topic, get rid of the terms "high-functioning" and "low-functioning". labelling us by how inconvenient we are is very weird and implies that "high functioning" autistic people dont need any help- which obviously is not true. +
also masking is a thing and just because i have the energy to mask does not mean i am any less autistic. autism is a spectrum. start seeing autism like the left, rather than the right. i hope that explains it well!
7. autistic people are not your textbooks for information on autism, google is free. if you have questions it can probably be solved by a simple google search! always try that first!
8. please just say "autistic people" and not "people with autism" im begging you
9. LISTEN to autistic people!! uplift our voices this month!!
10. lastly, have a good autism awareness month and continue educating yourself on how to be a better ally all year round. <3
