🚨Debt data alert 🚨
@WorldBank published data on lender composition of external debt for all developing countries (not just DSSI) in its IDS 2021.
Few summary plots and data download link in below thread 1/
It allows to track most prominent bilateral lenders to developing countries over time. See the descent of Paris Club lenders & rise of new lenders. 2/
This map highlights that China has gone from being the top bilateral lender in 3 developing countries in 2000 to being top lender in 52 developing countries in 2019 (out of 120 with data). 3/
This plot shows which countries have largest debt owed to Chinese counterparts (both official&private) in 2019 according to WB. 4/
But it is not all about China, there is lots to explore in the data in terms of lender composition. See breakdown of official lenders across regions. 5/
Finally note that WB data may be incomplete. 5% of bilateral debt stock data doesn't have its lender country classified. @SaisCari, @AidData, @The_Dialogue, @GDP_Center Horn et al. may have different datapoints due to lack of WB records or differing methods. 6/
The data wasn’t available for bulk download on WB website (and didnt get much attention). So we retrieved it via API, formatted it & added couple of extra variables w Balint Parragi. [END]
