A thread.

American today is often compared to Rome in its final days.

However, a comparison we don't see often enough is the treatment of conservatives in 2021 and to what took place to Christians in the first century in Rome.
Have you ever heard the phrase "Nero fiddled while Rome burned"? It's used to mean a person who isn't taking seriously a problem facing the state.

For example, one might say Pres. Biden is fiddling while Rome burned as it relates to the Southern border.
Behind that oft used phrase is a history that is repeating itself today.

Nero wanted to make way for his "Golden House" - a 100 acre complex complete with a 30-meter statue of himself. So he started what would be called the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.
The fire burned for more than a week and destroyed three of 14 Roman districts and severally damaged seven more.

Nero didn't actually play a fiddle, but is said to have worn a stage costume and perform ancient Greek literature as the city burned
- so the cliché is not too far from the truth.

But here's the thing - Nero had to remove suspicion from himself. So, he blamed the Christians living in Rome and executed, crucified and burned alive many of the accused.
The Roman historian, Tacitus, talked about the persecution in Rome at that time. He wrote that Christians and Jews were often charged with "hatred of humanity".

"Hatred of humanity" was a catch all charge that could apply to just about anything.
Do you see any parallels that can be made today? Are there tragic events being blamed incorrectly on conservatives or Christians or some other stand in, such as "white men".

To the left, it's all the same.

History is repeating itself.
