Social media makes us negative. About ourselves, about others. We feel inferior, we judge. We think, “they don’t really look like that” or “I wish I looked like that.” This tweet might be making you feel negative right now. If so… good! Let’s talk about that for a second.
If we check our feeds all day, and that causes us think negative thoughts all day… what's that doing to our mental health? Sure, a tiny little negative thought might not be an issue on its own. But a big pile of them built up hour after hour, day after day… you get the point.
Think you have a healthy relationship with social media? I’d encourage you to try something.
Before you open any social media today, remind yourself to pay attention to your thoughts. Get on, scroll as usual. But the FIRST moment you notice your thoughts are negative (and be honest), sign off. Walk away for a bit. Repeat.
Note how quickly the negative thoughts happen. Did you judge someone? Or yourself? Get riled up about an opinion you disagree with? Self-hate? The size of the reaction doesn’t matter, any negativity counts.
Some smokers joke about their habit: "it’s gonna kill me one day." At least they KNOW that what they’re doing is harming them. We should have the same relationship with social media. You don’t have to avoid it. You just have to know what it’s doing to you.
People often ask me why I don’t get on here more often. The answer is simple: I don’t like how it makes me feel. So I delete the apps from my phone and spend time with my wife and son instead. And that makes me feel terrific.
That being said, I hope you have a terrific day and GO YANKEES ALL OTHER TEAMS ARE TERRIBLE!!!!
