what& #39;s happening in lebanon; an important thread:
tw / explosion, police brutality, death, covid, rape, sexual harassment and abuse
1. let& #39;s start off with something everyone knows about, the beirut explosion that happened on the 4th of August 2020 :: leaving at least 7,500 people injured, 250 dead, and leaving almost 300k people homeless and some still haven& #39;t found a new home
the only one& #39;s to blame are the people who had known about the amount of ammonium nitrate stored there yet did nothing and nor told anyone about it. they didn& #39;t even bother moving it somewhere safer
the explosion wiped out most of the port which resulted into many things stored there to burn or explode such as food, furniture, basic needs, medicine etc..
2. the economic crisis :: the crisis has started since the beginning of last year and progressively gotten worse which now has lead into a huge crisis
the lebanese lira has lost almost 100% of its value currently
the lebanese lira has lost almost 100% of its value currently
because of the crisis, citizens cannot afford buying groceries, medicine or basic human needs. the prices in supermarkets have increased by more that 50% making most prices the double of what they used to
be
be
more than 60% of lebanese are now jobless, the remaining get either half of the amount they used to get or even less, and even if an adult were to get a second/part-time job, that& #39;s not possible because there are zero job opportunities
moreover, citizens are not allowed to take their own money from banks and if the bank even lets them, they take less than 200,000 lbp per month and that is worth nothing due to the crisis
the dollar rate rises on a daily and has reached the maximum of 15,200 lbp. in 2018-2019 the $ rate was about 1,515 and was like that for years and now it has no stable rate
poverty rates increase almost everyday because of this and is approximately at 50% nowadays
and regarding this whole situation, lebanon might even reach to a point where most of its people are starving and dying because of food shortage
food shortage has already started happening but no one knows how bad it will get
food shortage has already started happening but no one knows how bad it will get
3. covid and healthcare problems that are also being affected by the economic crisis :: many hospitals are unprepared, most have run out of equipment such as ICU beds, oxygen tanks/oxygen machines and lack of medicine
considering the fact that the country was not in a lockdown during holiday, the amount of cases rose in a very big amount which made things even worse for healthcare workers
the country entered a lockdown mid january of this year and safety measure were taken more into consideration,, in february, the lockdown started getting lifted off slowly
now, cases are starting to increase yet again because of the protests and lack of safety measures
4. revolution/protests aka thawra :: it started back in october of 2019, hundred of thousands of citizens of any age participated in all the peaceful protests that were held
roads were closed for almost a whole month and a bit more and had a streak of 100+ days on non stop protest. the protests were held everywhere in the country and all the people were united and had one goal only which was to take down the gov
the goal was to make everyone in the gov to quit regarding the fact that they had barely done any good to this country and have only caused problems to it
the protests later on started getting aggressive and dangerous when police started getting involved, they shot, teargassed, harassed and arrested protesters
about3 people have died because of this and many have been injured
about3 people have died because of this and many have been injured
5. electricity and water crisis :: this isn& #39;t something new for this country but lately it has been a big one. electricity would cutoff for almost 20 hours and water would cutoff for almost a day or two
not to mention the bad wifi connections which is very bad mostly for students who do online classes and adults to work from home
tw / sexual assault, harassment, rape
6. due to the fact that there is a lack of law against assault and harassment in lebanon, the cases of assault and harassment are pretty high not to mention that rape cases are high as well since no one in the gov pays attention to it
6. due to the fact that there is a lack of law against assault and harassment in lebanon, the cases of assault and harassment are pretty high not to mention that rape cases are high as well since no one in the gov pays attention to it
there& #39;s a huge lack of women& #39;s rights and even if there are some, they are barely respected
every women and men who face any type of assault have barely received any type of justice
