““O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!”
Matthew 23:37 NKJV
The prophets who were killed were killed because they refused to stop preaching what thus says the Lord. Kings would be like, “if you’re gonna preach you have to preach what I approve”
Or if you just stop preaching, you could get out of this jail cell.
“So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “ There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the LORD; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said, “Let not the king say such things!””
I Kings 22:8
“That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the LORD; Who say to the seers, “Do not see,” And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Get out of the way, Turn aside from the
path, Cause the Holy One of Israel To cease from before us.””
Isaiah 30:9-11 NKJV
In the New Testament we see the Pharisees treated the apostles the exact same way:

“saying, “Did we not strictly command you NOT TO TEACH in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!””
Acts 5:28 NKJV
All throughout history, the devil has always worked to try to silence honest people who preach what thus says the Lord in truth.

That has changed in modern day “sophisticated” times. The devil is still the devil and God is still God
“I raised up some of your sons as prophets, And some of your young men as Nazirites. Is it not so, O you children of Israel?” Says the LORD. “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, And commanded the prophets saying,

‘Do not prophesy!’”
Amos 2:11-12 NKJV
“Then the king said to the guards who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled and did not tell it to me.” But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to strike the priests of
the LORD.”
I Samuel 22:17 NKJV
“That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the LORD; Who say to the seers, “Do not see,” And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Get out of the way, Turn aside from the
path, Cause the Holy One of Israel To cease from before us.””
Isaiah 30:9-11 NKJV
“So it came to pass when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Arrest him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, withered, so that he could not pull it
back to himself.”
I Kings 13:4 NKJV
