Last week, my wife and I felt so overwhelmed with our new responsibilities as parents that we just held each other and broke down in tears. All we felt like doing was TAKE A VACATION FROM OUR OWN LIVES
No one really tells you how challenging parenting can be when you see the cute family photos. It's been months of a steady routine of baby care and we felt like we had missed out on every other aspect of our lives.
I didn't feel like I was giving a 100% to the other aspects of my life like my secular job and ministry, while my wife didn't feel like she had caught a break; all the way from pregnancy, a challenging delivery, recovery and now parenting.
We took each other on a mini-date (with baby of course) to clear our heads. We also spoke vulnerably about how we felt. I reassured my wife of how much I love her, how beautiful she is, and how grateful and privileged I am to be doing this with her by my side
She also reassured me of her love, & told me how great I'm doing as a dad & that I have been so supportive and involved every step of the way without pressuring her. We both felt strengthened & encouraged after the conversation and got the drive to hit the 'parenting' road again
More than ever, we see the need to be intentional. Amidst the routine, the family and in-law visits and pressures, fatigue, emotions, breastfeeding pressure and challenges, recovery, increased financial responsibilities...
...sleepless nights, babys' cry and fluctuating schedule, conflicts, and stress all within few months; it's very easy to drift apart as a couple. Thankfully, we are communicating every step of the way. We are doing it together and supporting each other
We have been blessed with a rare opportunity, to love a child like God loves us; a gift to the next generation. This has redefined our definition of success at this time.
It's still challenging, but we are more grateful for every smile, chuckle and cheer from our little man.
