As usual I’m doing this one on the fly, with just a few loose facts & a spark of inspiration?

Which President “suffered” the first assassination attempt?

What is AJ most famous for?

Fighting the banks.

Specifically: THE Bank

He had a crazy notion it’d influence our elections & cause the rich to become too powerful

Fun fact about the would-be assassin:

3/ Now you’ll note I put “suffered” in quotes regarding the assassination attempt, & for an awesome reason:

When the guns misfired, AJ just about beat Ricky to death with a cane

AJ apparently yelled “I know where this came from!” about the assassin

Hmm. But there’s more:

4/ First, one of the people that stopped AJ mid-beatdown was Davy Crockett

That’s right:

AJ went so medieval on this guy’s ass

that Davy-Fucken-Crockett had to go “Jesus Andy, enough!”

5/ But back to the would-be-assassin himself

Of course he was crazy. But his crazy was interesting:

He believed he was the King of England & President AJ’s opposition to the Bank meant he was denying the Crown what it was owed by Congress

“I know where this came from”.

Hmmm.

6/ Now, by all accounts, Ricky was crazy

Nonetheless, reading his days before the attempt is interesting

He wanted to leave the US but said “unnamed persons” were preventing him

His reason for the attempt was so The Bank would happen & England (& supposedly he) would be paid

7/ Supposedly, it was later stated that AJ thought Senator Calhoun planned it

Not the massively powerful banking factions whose plans he was interfering with

Call me crazy, but I don’t think AJ thought a rival in the Senate planned an assassination “just because”

8/ (Side note: some of the reports suggest AJ didn’t get to hit him with the cane; others suggest he got quite a few licks in.

9/ The assassination attempt happened in 1835, at the height of “The Bank War” & when President Jackson had turned the tides

& “The Demise of the Bank of the US” began

Precious metals, eh? Sound familiar?

& for the crazy assassin to SAY it was because of the Bank... c’mon

10/ Now some might say “Wasn’t Calhoun AJ’s VP?”

Not in 1835 he wasn’t. Then it was Van Buren.

In Congress, he was a major War Hawk, & led the call for a Declaration of War (which as shown above, the Brits were definitely seeking)

Then he was involved in the treaty process

Everyone remembers him as the guy who loved sIavery

It’s well-deserved

His argument for why we should annex Texas was based on the fear that the Brits might take it to spread their abolitionist ideas

He helped start the Civil War despite dying 10 years before it

His last words were “The South, the poor South!”

Back to 2BUS: he not only helped create it, he tried to expand it with a giant “bonus” of pork

but rather Useful Idiots being nudged a certain direction

& Calhoun as SecState negotiated their occupation of the land

while also working to skyrocket our national debt

There were 3 (& 1 Acting); while I have no doubt they’d all be interesting, we’re looking into the Assassination Attempt on AJ, so we’ll focus on

2BUS President for all of AJ’s Presidency (which was 1829-1837, FYI)

33/ First thing to get out of the way: he looks like a bitch

Next: we don’t have to look far for British connections:

Biddle was James Monroe’s *Minister to the Royal Court*

So the guy who ran 2BUS while AJ was trying to destroy it

Had direct access to British Royalty

I have to say, if that we’re my STATE Senator had that as their primary mission,

I’d wonder who the hell he was working for. Because it sure isn’t for the people of PA.

Here’s a concise layout of how it happened

He got into the equivalent of an Internet comment flame war with a journalist

assaulted the journalist while they were sick

Then got killed in a fair fight by the guy

Biddle poured thousands of dollars in THE BANK’S MONEY into a campaign to defeat AJ
