My new favourite thing is finding out one of the directors of WolfWalkers is going around replying to people who assume Robyn & Mehb are step-sisters (as they assumed the parents got together), and correcting them that it’s purposefully ambiguous:
It's genuinely ambiguous tho, if you're paying attention, and took the text of the film in good faith! The film has a running motif of an orange/yellow flower being given as a symbol of trust/protection/a promise/etc. 🌻 Here's how it breaks down:
We first see Bill giving it to Robyn (father to daughter), telling her to go home, be safe, he'll be back to come spend time with her later. He gives it to her through the bars of a cage tho; the promise is selfish, from a place of fear for Robyn's safety over her happiness.
We next see it is when Mebh & Robyn become friends, bonding over having a single parent/wanting to be free. Robyn promises to help Mebh find her mom, so she can get the wolves to leave to protect them from the town, but also a bit selfishly; she wants to prove herself to her dad.
When Mebh thinks Robyn's betrayed that promise/trust, she crushes & discards the flower. It's interesting to note that the flower isn't destroyed outright; technically Robyn chooses her promise to Moll to protect Mebh, over a now dangerous promise to Mebh that'd make her happier.
We see it last when Bill gives it to Moll. I interpreted it as Bill trusting Moll as a pack-member & promising to keep them all safe, but not caging them to do so (the flower framed through the caravan opening into the light vs him placing it on Robyn in a cage dividing them).
Getting Tin Hat about colours design/symbolism: the flower is yellow/orange. Bill/Robyn have yellow hair, while Mebh/Moll have orange; it's their pack in flower form. The flower changes hue depending on wearer; within the sequence Robyn gives it to Mebh, it changes to more yellow
Anyways, tl;dr: these wolves can be gay if you want. Thanks for coming to my gay wolf media analysis TED talk. Awoo. 🐺🏳️‍🌈🐺
