Anyways, yes, this is what i spent my $400 on. It’s great because it has a quad core processor, compared to my MacBook Airs dual core. It’s equipped with an i5-8259U, which is the same processor as the 2018 13” MacBook Pro, to help put it into perspective.
Gonna be rocking 8gb ram for now, and although single channel memory is bad, I just wanna be able to upgrade to 16gb later easily. Anything is better than 4gb RAM.
At the moment, I’m installing Windows 10, and will be installing macOS later in the evening (will be using OpenCore for those who care). I’ll be doing benchmarks comparing this to my 2015 MacBook Air, as well.
Its now booting without the USB
iMessage, iCloud, Apple ID, and Wi-Fi work
OpenCore nuked my Windows 10 EFI so I’ll have to reinstall it
anyways… time for some benchmarks maybe

sidecar works too btw, pretty flawlessly
no benchmarks tonight because i’m tired lol
i’m gonna be doing a few more things before going to bed tho

good morning
minecraft runs at 60fps, with high settings, which my old macbook air couldn’t do. it could hit 60fps but the settings were pretty low

This thing also doesn’t get much warmer than the temperature of my hand, and the fans rarely turn on. Very impressive.
Still can’t get over how fast Apps/Menus open on this Nuc
Anyways, Geekbench 5 on the Nuc took 2 minutes and 32 seconds. 4 minutes and 1 second on the MacBook Air.
Done with Cinebench R23. I didn’t time everything, but it took over 35 minutes to run the Single Core test on the 2015 Air lol
also i didnt run cinebench on potato pc because if it took 35 minutes on the air, i cant imagine how long it’ll take on that. probabl over an hour.

probably*
Compiling Ruby and launching a simulator was 108 seconds (1 minute and 48 seconds) faster on the Intel Nuc than on the 2015 MacBook Air. This is gonna save me a ton of time as I use it more.
I now have Windows 10 and macOS dualbooted without requiring a USB
and yes, i know this one is 2666MHz and the first is 3200MHz but 8th gen Intel is limited to 2400MHz so it doesn’t really matter lol
Been a while since I updated this thread, and this isn’t necessarily really Nuc related - but I bought a nice HyperX RGB keyboard because my old one that I got years ago is kinda loud and I just don’t like it that much. Coming in 2 days!
I plan to buy an MX Master next.

and yeah while originally i wanted a wireless one, i decided that you’re not really moving the keyboard so having a wire doesnt make much of a difference
I ordered an MX Master over the weekend and it came today lol
Having the thumb wheel for Final Cut is super epic, and also the scroll wheel can spin infinitely which is really cool for like trying to go far up in a conversation or something

I won’t be running Final Cut benchmarks because I’m lazy, but ngl the Nuc is actually really good at it lol
There’s very little lag when scrubbing, which my 2015 Air struggled with

I’ve only been playing with this mouse for a few hours and I just LOVE using it. It’s so ergonomic.
And on that note, this thread will basically be over for a while.
I might order some new speakers at some point, but the only part of my setup left to upgrade will be my monitor (which is a 1080p Samsung TN panel, 21.5”) — but I don’t intend on doing that yet because money
