Since MORTAL KOMBAT is in the news again, I’ll share a story that I found out while speaking to a couple members of the crew and the director a few years back from MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION. We all know MK:A is a disaster. It’s rushed and the CGI is horrific. Here’s the thing:
MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION is a workprint. The producers screened the film for test audiences and it was extremely positive. After the reactions - they thought why spend the extra money on this when it did so well in the test.
So all those atrocious scenes with CGI - those were all placeholders for the team to correct and touch up. All in all this was not Kasanoff’s idea to do this and in return kinda sunk the franchise into the ground. The final edit wasn’t even there.
This was all the studios fault after the test screening. Why finish it? They thought. They thought it was good enough and ripped the film from the hands of the filmmakers. The film still did well but the reviews were terrible and incredibly discouraging.
I always thought MK:A was odd because they had planned it, obviously had money, and basically somewhat of the same crew - why was it so bad? Well, Leonetti never got to finish his movie with the edit and other stuff they wanted to do. Not sure if this would have made a huge
difference or not. I honestly still love the movie and know what it is but I’m a die-hard MK fan and pretty biased with it. I will always love MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION but I would love to know what it could have been.
