In my view the biggest problem with democracy in the UK is that certain groups of people (most notably ethnic minorities and younger people) who are significantly less likely to vote.

Adding another barrier, however small, is only going to make that problem worse. https://twitter.com/NatashaC/status/1361993514700177412
It's not so much that people won't have access to a form of ID (a problem that I sure they will do a good enough job at getting around) but that adding any extra faff to the voting process is (in all likelihood) going to depress turnout - and probably among some groups more.
Oh, and of course, it is literally going to do sod all to fix the tiny amount of voter fraud that happens in the UK.
Voter ID rules were suggested by the Electoral Commission using what is one of the worst arguments ever presented for anything ever.

This is the full summary from the report. To conclude:
- People have a general concern about fraud taking place, but accept they don't know enough about the system to really have a strong view
-When you tell them the facts about the system they have confidence in it
To jump from that to concluding you need voter ID laws is completely bonkers.
If I were a cynic, which I'm obviously not, I might suggest that they already had a conclusion in mind and then searched around for a reason to justify it.
