Amid important statement by law minister that Dalits converting to Islam or Christianity are not entitled to SC quota, sharing five case studies by me where Dalit women and men availed of quota benefits despite conversion. Some of these cases saw action, but interesting stories:
Kavita, born Jaatav, became Ashiya after marriage to Moazzam. She fought and won zila panchayat poll on reserved seat. When a Dalit outfit took her to court, she first said she isn’t married to Moazzam, but well...law caught up with her. In this case, a dalit woman who became Shakila after marriage, won zila panchayat poll on reserved seat. When a dalit outfit took her to NCSC, she was found to have availed of Haj subsidy. In this case, a woman, born Dalit but converted to Islam for marriage(Babli became Gulshan Jahan), misused her old identity 14 years later to contest six times on reserved seats. For one of the above reports, the Bijnor police chief took note of my tweet and said that Dalits who convert to Islam or Christianity continue to be Dalits. Later, when we contested the claim, they changed opinion
