Genshin Impact fashion roast/critique made by a fashion design student: a thread

This is not a character hate thread at all, I’m just looking at their designs from an artist’s perspective and judging them with no bias

Also I will only be critiquing the current playable characters as well as those who have made a cameo appearance in the game

Also a heads up that there will be some strong language at times

OKAY let’s start

Aether, 8/10

- The cape is actually very interesting design wise because it wraps around his neck in the front as a scarf
- The crop top with the cross straps is definitely the statement piece though, it pairs well with the cape and gives a nice balance (short top/long cape)+

- To bring shape to his lower body and emphasize his exposed waist even more they gave him balloon pants which is SUCH A MOVE
- The only complaint I have is that his pant and shoe design do not seem as interesting as his top or cape

Lumine, 5/10

- There’s nothing that catches my eye visually to be honest, the concept was just “white dress”
- I do like her two scarf tails that hang down her back, it’s a nice contrast to Aether who has his scarf hanging front
- I think the cutout in her sleeve is awkward+

as well as the black halter straps on her chest
- I would’ve loved to see some sheer textures in her dress skirt or on her gloves, that would’ve looked nicer than the tablecloth looking fabric she has on

Amber, 5/10

- Overall a very cute but simple design, however I do like the hoodie (?) attached to her red cropped long sleeve
- The biggest complaint I have here is her shoes, they look like socks ?? The fabric looks like its very thin and is just an extension of her thigh highs

Kaeya, 9/10

- Everybody’s favorite, the tittie window outfit
- This design is literally designed for your eye to gravitate towards his chest, all the details are centered around his top half, while his pants and shoes are more simple
- What I like in this outfit is actually+

the smaller accents like the chain draped across his chest window and the garter connected to his fingerless !! gloves on his left hand

Lisa, 5/10

- Another tittie window, Mondstadt characters have a lot of these which we’ll see again later many times
- She has a slit skirt with shorts underneath, again another thing we’ll see a lot with other characters except with the Liyue girls instead
- I’m a little+

disappointed with her design, if they were thinking of a sexy witch concept there could’ve been so many better alternatives to the generic slit skirt/tittie window pair
- What I DO like are the lace roses on the edge of her tights as well as her anklets with the teardrop gems

Jean, 7/10

- First thing that catches my eye is the isolated collar, I actually like this a lot
- I also really like the off shoulder puff sleeves which lead into the black gloves
- The reddish orange accents near her waist contrast nicely with the blue insides of her cape

- Her pants hug her crotch and look tight as FUCK, they look super thin and more like leggings than actual pants which I don’t like

Diluc, 4/10

- This outfit is very awkward just like him, his coat is very similar to a rug with tassels coming off his shoulders and fur trim???? pick a struggle
- There’s a strange belt buckle running across his waist, how does it even stand up idek

- He’s got some alt goth Hot Topic combat boots I see
- The saving grace is the gloves tbh, the red insides are a nice touch and I would’ve liked to see more red accents on his design

Venti, 8/10

- Adorable design, the long flowing cape has a cutout in the middle to resemble wings which is a nice touch as the Anemo archon
- Same tights as Jean, he wears it better tbh

- The white ruffled blouse with the high collar gives off the impression that he’s a noble, which is hilarious because isn’t he literally homeless right now

Noelle, 7/10

- ANOTHER tittie window design, MHY I see what you’re doing
- Similar to Lisa, the concept was there but the execution...
- The hot pink details (roses, bows, necktie, etc) are evenly spread throughout the outfit which is very pleasing to the eye
- The apron is+

pretty horrendous, what is that weird scale-shaped trimming? Why can’t you just give her normal ruffles smh

Barbara, 7/10

- Many parallels to Jean, one obvious one is the isolated collar and the sleeves which are puffed toward the wrist area
- Pretty simple here, nothing much to point out
-The gold detailing with the navy was a good color combination at least

Fischl, 10/10

-GOTH QUEEN
- There’s a lot of good design imbalance going on here with the gloved/not gloved hands and the one leg which is fully covered vs the other which has a garter and reveals the thigh area
- Her skirt is cut in a way that resembles feathers+

which is ofc referencing Oz
- Theres a mesh see-through fabric which runs through the bodice, it’s hard to see in this picture but the mesh fabric creates an illusion neckline, a design element I LOVE
- Upon looking closer I noticed that there’s actually a+

black extension on her right sleeve that connects and loops around her middle finger...so fucking delicious

Razor, 8/10

-A boy who lives in the woods with wolves but still has more style than most people in Mondstadt
-The sleeveless hooded coat with the belt buckles is probably my favorite thing about his outfit, however the shawl/cowl neck crop top is pretty damn good too

- also THUMBLESS GLOVES? Wow just wow I’m drooling
- The bones?? teeth?? idk what it is but whatever is on his necklace and belt strap is really giving him a “wild” vibe and I like it

Mona, 5/10

- Not gonna lie I have no idea what’s going on here, she looks really naked from the bottom down, like she accidentally forgot to put on pants or she’s gonna go for a swim
- I feel like she needs some light ruffles or a skirt around her hip area

- The repeated star motif is actually quite cute though, I especially like how it travels up her leg on her tights and how her choker has a star shaped stud

Sucrose, 8/10

- The blue ruffles around her hip make it seem like she’s wearing a skirt but surprise, it’s actually shorts
- Also whenever I see garters I just :)
- Not fashion related but why tf does she have a rat tail that was so unnecessary

Bouken da bouken, 6/10

-“Ur gonna get cold sweetie” *closes shirt*
- He looks like a Kingdom Hearts character
- Seriously what the fuck is going on with his shirt, why is it so long but doesn’t cover him at all, the stand up collar and the cross straps are nice though

Klee, 2/10

- I’m so sorry but this is a really boring outfit, since she’s a kid I’ll let it slide because she’s probably not even old enough to dress herself
- Her beret is really similar to Venti’s, maybe they shop at the same place? Idk I’m really struggling here

Diona, 5/10

- Same thing with Klee, pretty plain EXCEPT her scarf ?? tail with the flower trim is kinda cute
- Another repeat of the puffed sleeve design, I’m getting a little tired of it honestly

Albedo, 10/10

- The chains, the arm braces, the cross body belt, the THIGH HIGH BOOTS?? drippy as fuck
- His long white coat resembles a lab coat which is a cute connection to him being an alchemist
- His shorts which cut off right where his boots start create the+

illusion that he’s wearing full length pants
- I don’t like it when people wear a mix of gold and silver but since his design is so sick imma let it slide

Xiangling, 5/10

-Pretty basic, it feels like it’s missing something around the bodice area
- Could’ve gone with a color other than brown tbh, I would’ve liked to see more fiery warm tones
- The bow on the chest was a little cheesy and not really necessary

Ningguang, 9/10

- The arm cuffs with the long draping ruffled fabric is so elegant and really elongates her body
- The diamond cutouts underneath the slit skirt *drools*
- The fur around her neck and the gold detailing screams “rich sugar mommy” and I’m here for it

Zhongli, 7/10

- Nice rich man aristocrat vibes, you would never guess he’s broke asf
- The tassels on his coat tails are a nice touch to an otherwise semi-boring design
- Weird detail to nag on but the way his pants end looks awkward, I couldn’t tell his shoe from his pants

Xiao, 8/10

- LOVE the sleeveless form-fitting shirt
- Doesn’t show here but...back window *crowd cheers*
- Very asymmetrical design with the long draping sleeve on one side vs no sleeve
- WHAT ARE THOSE BOOTS they’re so damn hideous

Xingqiu, 12/10

- I’m gonna cry
- The first thing I noticed was his short ass shorts, there’s a whole lotta leg here but he makes it work
- The bell sleeves with the slit opening that reveals the white ruffled shirt underneath, I have no words this is too good

- The blouse he’s wearing is opened again at his right midriff area to reveal the shirt underneath, I love this detail SO MUCH
- The blouse is short in the front but longer in the back with an asymmetrical cut and golden gradient on the inside??? king of extra

- Also the fact that the asymmetrical cut of his blouse is shorter on the right and longer on the left is SO VISUALLY SATISFYING because his haircut is asymmetrical as well but the exact opposite+

with the right side of his hair longer and the left facing side of his hair shorter, this detail really balances out the entire look and doesn’t cause as much visual chaos when viewing him as a whole

I’m super tired and sleepy so imma take a break here, I’ll add the rest of the characters later

OKAYY continuing on

Chongyun, 7/10

- Street style, but make it ancient China
-I have no idea how his undershirt and pants work, are they connected like a jumper or are they separate pieces??
- His shoes are soo basic, is it just me or do his feet look like horse hooves

- The flowing panels on his front and back side add more movement and just overall make his outfit less static, nice detail there
- Another character with fingerless gloves with a bonus diamond cutout, by now you can probably tell I have an obsession with fingerless gloves

Keqing, 7/10

- There’s a lot of peacock feather motifs here, some are bustled around the right side of her waist, some are printed on her arm sleeves
- I would’ve like to see more color combinations going on, like maybe replace the bluish purple layer of her skirt with+

the same pink thats in her eyes or maybe even gold, just to make it more visually interesting
- Her tight design is cute with how the print travels up from her right ankle and down from her left thigh, again balancing design proportions

Beidou, 6/10

- Similar to Lisa, or maybe Lisa is similar to her
- The small gap between her shorts and thigh high boots creates a nice negative space, also doesn’t make her look too stuffy
- Biggest complaint is I don’t see anything original here+

the slit skirt, thigh high boots, fur trim, and the tassels hanging on the end of her cape/skirt have all been done before with the other characters

Qiqi, 8/10

- Keqing’s little sister color palette wise
- The long fluttery sleeves and the loose babydoll dress silhouette really make her look small like a doll
- The ying yang balls attached to the end of the back panels are adorable

Xinyan, 7/10

- Basically if you mashed Beidou and Xiangling together
- The recurring spikes in her hair, on her shoulders, and on her ankle balances the outfit
- There’s also a lot of diamond shapes here, like the cutout above her chest and the shape of her undershorts+

This was probably to make her more angular looking and less soft/round, when you pair it with the spikes it gives her a stronger, wilder impression

Ganyu, 3/10

- I’m so sorry queen
- She’s wearing a literal body sock wtf
- The skirt (not even a skirt really just cloth) and sleeve ends are cutout in a way that mimics a lotus flower which is cute and all but I still can’t get over the fact that she’s wearing a BODY SOCK

Childe, 1/10

- *chuckles* oh boy
- First thing to note here is the ugly ass grey color, it makes the whole outfit look like so boring and is not pleasing to the eye
- In fashion design there’s something called greige fabric (unfinished/no dye), thats literally what he’s wearing

- Another thing to pick on here is just the way his jacket is positioned, it just looks like he wrapped a cloth around his body and fastened it with whatever’s on his shoulder
- Also his shoes, why is one flap down and the other standing up?
- The red scarf is pretty cheesy imo+

It looks like he never grew out of his “I’m a superhero” phase from when he was 5
- His delusion unleashed outfit is a darker variant of his original but it’s wayy better, you can actually see the chain draped over his right shoulder and the scarf doesn’t stand out in a bad way

- There’s also no concept here, his outfit doesn’t tell anything about his character and there’s no details or design aspects that share that he’s from Snezhnaya or that he has a cheery but scheming personality
-Childe fuckers don’t attack me, I am literally one of you

Baizhu, 7/10

- It starts out very strong with the crop top with tassels and the shirt hanging over his shoulders, but as your eyes travel down, yikes
- His pants looks like something my Asian grandma would wear
- Maybe I’m overthinking but there’s a parallel going on with Qiqi+

one of his gloves is black and the other is white, probably referencing ying and yang, this might be a stretch though

Signora, 11/10

- My favorite aspect of her design are the black diamonds around her neck that lead down towards her bust
- The cutouts at her sides and around the midriff area are SO SEXY and the high cut slit skirt that drags on the floor is so *chefs kiss*

- The deep red and black fur coat and gloves give me gothic Victorian vibes, it just overall makes her look very luxurious and a little domineering which aligns with her personality so far
- The small hint of her leg tattoo peeking out underneath *passes out*

Scaramouche, 12/10

-OH MY GOD *chokes*
- There’s so many things to look at here but I don’t feel overwhelmed at all because they all tie in together
- It’s the hat. The hat is the best part
- The red, purple, white, and black color combination is stunning
- Similar to Kaeya+

your eyes will naturally gravitate to his chest (also his hat because it’s so damn big) and you’ll see the large gold electro symbol which is definitely hinting to a part of his lore
- I stared at his feet for a while because I noticed that his socks have the toe and heel area+

cut out, also he’s wearing geta which is traditional Japanese sandals and is a clue that he’s from Inazuma (other than the obvious electro symbol)

Rosaria, 9/10

-The silver crown with the veil is such a power move, it even creates the illusion that she has longer hair too
- Another asymmetrical cut skirt (again wouldn’t even say it’s a skirt though, more like a cloth that covers her crotch)
- FISHNETS
- The black and red+

buckle straps hanging loosely from her wrist and a waist add more movement to the look along with the veil
- Her rebellious attitude is clearly reflected into the way she dresses with the whole punk theme

BONUS: Ayaka 7/10

- She’s my thread header so it would be a crime to not do her too
- My favorite thing about her design is her stand up collar lapels, Elvis Presley who?
- Her bodice is actually a breastplate and her skirt has armor on it, that’s pretty badass
- Sleeves are+

boringg, could’ve been better
-It’s hard to tell she’s a princess, there’s no outstanding factor about her and she looks more like a battle maiden if anything

okay that’s it for my fashion thread, looking back I realized it wasn’t REALLY a roast except for a few characters (Childe), and more of just an appreciation thread for their smaller design details
