This is dreamcatcher. An all korean girl group. Not one even slightly indigenous member.
Each girl is knowingly and willingly using indigenous culture to have a "unique concept" and make money
First I'm going to explain what a dreamcatcher is.
Dreamcatchers are handmade wooden hoops, bent into a circle and feature beads, feathers and what we believe are protective charms. It is made to resemble a spider web. Its a common story that dreamcatchers were made to keep away
nightmares but this isnt entirely true. Dreamcatchers are also believed to protect children and infants from bad energy and evil influences in place of Asibikaashi (or The Spider Women) who is a mythological figure who takes care of Ojibwe children.
When Europeans came to colonize North America, first nation groups (including the Ojibwe people) were forced to adapt to the Europeans currency system to support their families. Ojibwe peoples obtained this currency by selling dreamcatchers. This is why creating or selling
dreamcatchers when you're not Indigenous (or even Ojibwe!) is CA (cultural appropriation) and incredibly offensive. We sold dreamcatchers to support our families. This isnt just a little prop or craft hobby for you.
When Deukae rebranded they said they researched dreamcatchers. And this video/screenshots below show they actually have. They saw and learned about dreamcatchers and decided they wanted to make this their new name, concept and aesthetic. This is incredibly disrespectul, treating
dreamcatchers as a meaningless aesthetic and Deukae continue to use them despite knowing the cultural significance. Deukae dont just use dreamcatchers as their concept. They label their concept "nightmare." This upsets us because for years and years we have been labeled and scary
and evil savages by our governments, articles and other media. So to have them relate a culturally significant object to nightmares and horror is sickening.
Fans like to call this "cultural appreciation" instead of cultural appropriation but this is also wrong. Cultural appreciation requires permission from the culture thats being "appreciated." Reducing a culture to nothing but "nightmares" and "villans" would never be agreed to so
its obvious we dont have this agreement. Ojibwe people would never agree to have an significant part of their culture used as album covers, props and an entire girl group name.
Another thing that makes us uncomfortable is that Deukae took the story of Asibikaashi and did this!
It gets worse. Deukae included a "DIY Dreamcatcher Kit" in their latest album "Road to Utopia" THIS IS CA. They are stealing someones culture and encouraging fans to appropriate it too. Fans who buy this album are supporting and encouraging this so I beg you do not buy the album.
A dreamcatcher not made by an Ojibwe or First Nation is cultural appropriation. By making one or encouraging others to make one, you're helping to wreck our culture and normalize it as a cute little hobby.
I hope fans will understand and help my people get the apology we need.
Until Dekukae rebrand, they are actively appropriating Ojibwe culture. They are knowingly using our culture to make money and "stand out" against other Korean girls groups. #deukaeapologize
If there are any Korean somnias who want to help me write a template to address this, my dms are open!
Also an InSomnia explained to me that Deukae no longer do the "nightmare" concepts and moved onto Dystopia. However the use of dreamcatchers is still a problem.
People keep sending me this thread so I was to explain why it's rather disrespectful. This user has no right to speak on whether what Deukae does is offensive or not. Firstly, they are a Brazilian Native, not Ojibwe and no where near Ojibwe people. https://twitter.com/DiademInsomnia/status/1191001167981162497
We are located in Southern Canada and Northern US. All this user knows about our culture is what they were taught in school which wasn't accurate, the teachers were encouraging students to make dreamcatchers (which is CA). Don't listen to someone with a university degree over
someone who is actually part of the culture being appropriated. If you're not Ojibwe, please don't try to speak for us. You're doing more harm than good. Thank you!
