The biggest difference between hunter-killers and you
Isn’t equipment, or even training

Situational Awareness (SA)
The attribute of being cognizant of changes to one’s environment
One of the most important skills in relationships, business, and self defense
The attribute of being cognizant of changes to one’s environment

Why is SA important?
Because it takes 2-5 seconds to consciously react to danger
Yet people walk around in a brain fog, always thinking or otherwise distracted
Totally vulnerable

Read my thread on knife fighting, and then realize that you could literally be stabbed and take 2-5 seconds to
1. See the knife
2. Understand that you are being stabbed
3. Begin to react
You will be full of holes by the time you even begin to respond

In 2-5 seconds, a man like me could easily kill you
But this is about more than surviving knife attacks. SA is important in other aspects of your life

Read the 48 Laws of Power and you will begin to understand that most of the Laws rely on *understanding your environment*
- How can you play the power game
- Negotiate with a business rival
- Or pick up the hot girl
If you can’t read the room?

Tip # 1: Live in Condition Yellow
There are 3 conditions of awareness
White – Unaware of what is going on around you. Where most people live and you don’t want to
Yellow – Aware of what’s going on around you and consistently scanning the environment
Red – Threat is imminent and we are preparing to react

Obviously, you can’t live your life on Red; you’ll get an aneurysm
But we want to avoid slipping into White; this is where the sheep live
So occasionally remind yourself: “Be on Yellow”

Tip #2: Develop a Baseline
The easiest way to detect changes to the environment is to be aware of what is typical for the environment
- Noise
- Lighting
- People’s dress and behavior
- The mood of the room

In a combat patrol, it is common SOP to do a SLLS halt:
Stop
Look
Listen
Smell
This give soldiers a moment to absorb the aspects of their environment, so that they can determine a baseline

Conduct your own SLLS halt whenever you stop somewhere
When you go into a coffee shop, or your office, or anytime you transition from moving to stopping (or vice verse)
Take a few minutes to just sit and observe
Eventually, this becomes a habit

Things to look for in individuals (when scanning for danger):
People who seem uncomfortable
Weird clothes (jackets in summer) or bulging clothes
Their hands

Tip #3: Practice to Improve
Through consistent application and practice, your SA will become superhuman
I tell you this from experience

Kim’s Game is an excellent training tool. It can be done with a photo or in person, by yourself or with a friend
Take a moment to scan the room, then close your eyes and answer questions about the environment
Take a moment to scan the room, then close your eyes and answer questions about the environment
- How many women are in the room?
- How many people are wearing hats?
- How many coffees are on desks?
Describe the entire room to yourself, then observe again and see what you got wrong

Another game: describe your morning commute, in detail.
- What buildings do you pass by, in order?
- How many billboards do you see?
Walk yourself through your commute mentally, then compare

You can even practice Situational Awareness on Twitter
In the painting in the first post in this thread, how many people are wearing hats?
Can you remember without looking?

When you begin to develop superhuman levels of observation through practice, your SA becomes faster
This has tremendous payoff in conversations and negotiations
It’s also great for picking up women

I promise you, Situational Awareness is a skill

It will serve you well
