Based on the report, the index case arrived at Kuching International Airport on 29th December 2020.

Sarawak Policy: Anyone entering Sarawak must serve mandatory 10 days hotel quarantine & RT-PCR test on 2nd & 8th day. There is enough hotel quarantine in Kuching.
But she probably seek for exemption for quarantine order in Kuching to pay for the last respect for her father who just passed away in Sibu. Hence, her 1st swab test was taken in Kch & when the result returned negative, she was allowed to continue her flight from Kch to Sibu.
When cases were rising with PKPB / PKPD elsewhere in Malaysia, Sarawak remain as a green zone state. Our policies were working. Most rural areas never had any positive case in 2020!

On the day of the funeral itself, Sarawak only had 4 yellow zones & 36 green zones.
Ever since the beginning of pandemic, Sarawak’s Covid19 case is usually condensed in cities like Kuching & Miri only. Sibu like many small towns/rural areas has been shield from Covid19.

But how did this cluster spread so fast?
Sibu is the central region of Sarawak. Considering the Covid19 situation in Sarawak is controlled (PKPP), it was believed many of the relatives/families nearby Sibu came to the funeral. Some stayed overnight at the longhouses as the village is located 30km outskirt of Sibu town.
ā€œIt was found that at Cluster Pasai, only those who stayed overnight at the longhouse were positive & those who attended the funeral where largely unaffected.ā€ — Mr Clarence Ting (Sibu Mayor)
According to Sarawak Deputy CM, ā€œIn Iban, when you do funerals sometimes it’s like a celebrationā€.
Iban funerals differ from place to place. Some funeral has sad atmosphere but some Iban funeral in certain places allow and give way to a happy surrounding bc there’s a believe that a happy funeral means a happy soul leaving away and the soul too like the happy surrounding.
We can’t blame them for the happy funeral bc that is their culture but IF the girl stayed in her room, followed the 14 days quarantine SOP strictly & didn’t join the ritual/burial, probably this mess wouldn’t happen. If she knew she can’t be discipline, she shouldn’t come back!
When her 2nd swab took place (Sarawak SOP) & it turns out positive, it was 10 DAYS after the burial. By that time, the relatives had went back to other rural areas & unknowingly brought along the virus to their longhouses. This has resulted to 80+ longhouses being lockdown. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😢" title="Weinendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Weinendes Gesicht">
This has been a very difficult time for Sarawak because all these times, we’ve been trying hard to protect the virus from spreading to rural areas as these places is lacking of good healthcare facilities & the nearest hospital is very far & geographically difficult to reach.
Now, it is the other way round. The challenge is to test & trace everyone fast before the spread from rural areas goes into the big cities. Yes, cross districts are now not allowed in Swk. Currently, hospitals in all over Swk is nearly full. Mostly to accommodate this cluster.
Lesson:
If you are given quarantine order, please be disciplined! If your first swab test is negative, it doesn’t mean you are Covid19 free. Covid19 has 14 days incubation period, you can be positive on Day 7 or Day 10. Wait for your 2nd swab test result before mingling around!
Everybody in Sarawak work so hard to keep Sarawak safe. It takes ONE person to breach quarantine coming back from Johor, attended her father’s funeral & resulted in thousands being quarantine, 1 death & 893 others positive so far. (2857 is still pending for result)
If this will result Sarawak not allowing Sarawakians to return for emergencies in future, they should put the blame on you. #PrayForSarawak
Sarawakians have the right to be mad. Many are innocently positive now even though they didn’t attend the funeral, government need to fork out more money, leaves are frozen for frontliners, businesses are losing money & face-to-face class in schools had to be postponed again.
Whose to blame the most is those who knew they came from a high risk area & should avoid coming to such occasion no matter what excuses they have. If the person is still stubborn, one must ensure that they avoid mixing/socialising with anyone at the occasion. Don’t be an idiot!

This is the 3rd week after the funeral. The virus is spreading very fast. Originating from one longhouse to another longhouse & we now see sporadic cases in the community. This is just one of the example. There are many other longhouses in rural areas affected after the incident.
At this point, there are probably thousands infected with the virus but not yet detected (especially the asymptomatic ones). I’m not sure how will they stop the spread unless they are able to test everyone & release the result fast. What if 80 other longhouses has the same story.
